Trucking Reliance Increases but Rising Costs Spell Trouble for Small Carriers

Friday, June 7th, 2013

Trucking continues to dominate as the primary means of transporting freight over any other mode in the United States.  In the American Trucking Associations’ ATA American Trucking Trends 2013 report issued last week, trucking increased last year compared to 2011, accounting for 9.4 billion tons of freight (68.5% of all domestic shipments). With 6.9 million trucking-related employees, 2012’s trucking hit “$642.1 billion in gross freight-related revenues, or 80.7 percent of the nation’s freight bills.” 1

Bob Costello, ATA Chief Economist explains, “As the nation continues to travel the road to recovery following the Great Recession, it is becoming increasingly clear that trucking is leading the way.”

With shippers heavily relying on trucking to get their products delivered to customers on time, it may come as a surprise that only 2.8% of fleets contain over 20 trucks, with 90.5% of carriers operating six or under. 1 But increased costs spell trouble for small carriers.

“Smaller carriers can’t handle the increased costs of industry regulations and can’t hold their heads above water any longer,” spoke ATA Chairman Mike Card at the Great West Fleet Executive Conference held last week.  “Trucking has been consolidated.  The primary reason for consolidation in the trucking industry is the costs associated with increased regulation.” 2

Among these regulations Card is referring to include the following:

-Revisions to the hours-of-service, becoming effective July 1st, which include a restart provision containing two consecutive breaks between the hours of 1 a.m. and 5.am., reducing a driver’s work week from 82 to 70 hours, as well as a mandatory 30-minute break if 8 hours or less have passed since the driver’s last off-duty period.

-CSA, which is holding carriers and drivers more accountable, is limiting the number of unsafe drivers from the road, and thus, a carrier’s fleet.

-The mandatory use of electronic onboard recorders, which Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Anne Ferro believes will be proposed by September, would further dig into carrier’s pockets.

Other mandates Card referred to included “emissions standards, anti-lock brakes, fuel standards, and more.” 2

As Card explained, “It doesn’t matter how old you are.  It matters how big you are. If you’re not big enough and profitable enough to handle the additional cost of regulation, you’re going to struggle to survive,” stating that carriers “basically have only three options for leaving the industry, ‘merger, sale or death.’” 2

In fact, Card posed the idea that one day the trucking industry will have consolidated so far that it could be left with only four or five carriers to choose from, like the airline industry, and that similarly, shipments will be booked online. 2

Touching Music Video Portrays Truck Drivers as True ‘Highway Angels’

Wednesday, December 21st, 2011

“Road to road, coast to coast, giving back when they get the chance to.  Saved my life passing through, I thank God I can say, thank you” are the lyrics behind country singer Lindsay Lawler’s new song Highway Angel, currently taking the trucking industry by storm.

The music video, meant to recognize the men and women saving lives everyday…the truck driver, was released earlier this year, telling the story of a mother and child who get in a car wreck.  A truck driver witnessing the accident pulls over, carrying the woman out of the car, saving her and her child’s life.

The song was commissioned by the Trucking Carriers Association (one of many trucking groups supporting the works of Lawler) for their Highway Angel Program (http://www.truckload.org/Highway-Angel), which recognizes those drivers who have performed heroic or kind deeds.

Too many times, the kind acts of these drivers go unnoticed by those outside of the trucking industry.  As Lawler explained, “Our big challenge right now is that we really want to take the work we’ve done inside the trucking industry and take it outside.  Everyone in the industry knows how great truckers are, but we want to try and take the word outside” (http://www.truckflix.com/news_article.php?newsid=7657).

Everyday truck drivers are performing courageous acts outside of their job duties.  Take Road Scholar Transport driver Rob Pollock for example.  One day he was delivering to a company in Berlington, Massachusetts.  As he waited at the dock, he noticed a man in a tractor trailer next to him hunched over the steering wheel.  Rob went over and tapped on the window.  Noticing that the man’s eyes were rolled back, he opened the door and pulled him out, which was a task given how high up the man was.  Once out, Rob laid the man on the ground and assessed the situation.

Trained in CPR, Rob checked to make sure that the man’s heart was still beating…it was.  He then checked to make sure that he wasn’t choking…he wasn’t.  The man was still unresponsive.
As Rob was checking the man, a woman came out of the company.  Noticing what was happening, she immediately called an ambulance.  The man had been one of their drivers.

Rob continued to tend to the man as they waited for the ambulance, during which time the man started to come back.  Rob stood with him and kept him awake.

It turned out that the man had low blood sugar and went into a seizure.

“This happened at 5 in the morning so who knows how long it would have taken someone to find him,” Rob said.

Many of these drivers don’t want any recognition for what they had done, doing it out of the goodness of their hearts.  That’s why people such as Lawler feel the need to spread the word.

“I am so blessed to have connected with the trucking industry in order to spread a positive message and image through music. The drivers give so much of their time, energy and hard work on the road every single day, while leaving behind family, friends and commitments at home. They do this so that we can continue about our daily routines with all of the food, products, services etc. that we need in order to live. Cause after all, if you bought it, a truck brought it!” she states on her website http://www.lindsaylawler.com.

I remember that the road was wet, the bright lights from the cars ahead
I remember every word from the prayer I said
And I remember how time stood still
It seemed like forever until the world came crashing
Down, around me, and I closed my eyes
And I wondered if it was my time
Or was there a…

Highway Angel, a beautiful stranger
Who would be the light, on my darkest night
And save me from this hell
Highway Angel

I remember how you reached your hands through the broken glass
And how it all just seemed to go so fast
I never even got your name, but how could I forget the face
Of a hero sent my way by God’s amazing grace

Highway Angel, a beautiful stranger
Who would be the light, on my darkest night
And save me from this hell
Highway Angel

Road to road, coast to coast, giving back when they get the chance to
Saved my life passing through, I thank God I can say, thank you

Highway Angel, a beautiful stranger
Who would be the light, on my darkest night
And save me from this hell
Highway Angel

Hallelujah, Highway Angel
Hallelujah, Highway Angel
Hallelujah, Highway Angel
Hallelujah, Highway Angel

Road Scholar Transport Celebrates its 23-Year Anniversary

Thursday, September 8th, 2011

Road Scholar Transport celebrates its 23rd year in business today, September 8th.

Established in 1988 by Jim Barrett and his wife Debra, Road Scholar was just getting its wheels on the road when Jim leased a 27-year-old tractor trailer and acted as the company’s sole driver as Debra dispatched from their son’s bedroom.  That year, Jim accumulated four trucks, earning $500,000 in receipts.

The next year, that number escalated to $2 million and continued to steadily grow to $25 million in receipts in 2000.   As for Road Scholar’s four tractor trailers, they received some company, now growing to 140 tractors and around 300 trailers!

Now, 23-years later from when its first truck hit the road, Road Scholar continues to operate out of its headquarters in Dunmore, PA with four additional terminals in Leominster, MA-Jersey City, NJ-Philadelphia, PA-and Denver, PA.

Road Scholar Transport

Take that 27-year-old rented tractor trailer that Jim began with and compare it with the company’s 97 tractors and 305 dry vans and refrigerated trailers they run today, with the newest units being 2012 models driven by Road Scholar’s Hazmat certified drivers.

Did we mention the advanced technology Road Scholar has incorporated over the years?

From our social media presence (check us out on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Youtube) to our advanced security features (SkyBitz satellite tracking, electronic door monitoring, temperature monitoring, Navalock, Qualcomm and much more) Road Scholar Transport is  constantly looking to build on its technological presence and the safety of your cargo.

And what about our awareness program?  What Road Scholar awarenessstarted out with a single pink tractor trailer to raise breast cancer awareness turned into over twenty-one awareness trucks dedicated to various charities with that number continuously growing.

Throughout the years, Road Scholar has developed into a multi-million dollar company with an outstanding safety record and reputable service to its customers.

Only one question remains, what will we think of next?

Social Media Usage Encouraged Among Trucking Companies

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

social mediaAn article posted in Transport Topics yesterday encourages trucking companies to take an initiative that Road Scholar Transport has been doing for a year now…using social media to connect with their customers/audience.  These networks include Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Youtube, and blogging.

According to the article, social networking poses many benefits to trucking companies including:

-An accessible information database that allows trucking companies to improve their fleets (for example, by posting available trailers, saving the company deadhead mileage costs) and provide support to their customers

-Interaction with employees via private or public groups

-Makes it easier for current customers to connect with the company, allowing them the ability to be alerted of discounts, news, and voice their opinion/interact with other customers on a carrier’s service

-Opens the company to a wider range of prospects with the ability to connect with individuals from specific locations

As the article notes, social media’s “effective use can bring about a competitive advantage, with adoption ensuring not only survival but also success in an increasingly competitive global marketplace,” further explaining that “their value is game-changing and clearly a new frontier worth further and ongoing exploration” (http://www.ttnews.com/articles/basetemplate.aspx?storyid=26999).  So beneficial, in fact, that more and more trucking companies are using it, with “56% of respondents reporting that social media was very important to their business strategy, a number that jumped from 43% in 2009,” the article continues.

This is not something new to Road Scholar, who has been using all five platforms for over a year now.  Below are ways in which you can connect with Road Scholar:

Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/roadscholartransport88facebook

Video: Tractor Trailer Goes on Rampage…Who is Handling Your Freight?

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

You may remember the live broadcast on October 15, 2004 of a truck driver who went on a rampage in his tractor trailer in Bellaire, Texas.  Footage of the event was popularized in 2007 when Court TV aired the incident.  In case you don’t remember, here is a refresher:

rampage

In a riot, the driver first crashed into a store and then took off on the freeway at full speed with police on his tail.

Why the need for speed?  It wasn’t because he was late for a delivery.

Two main reasons given for the driver’s reckless behavior were job stress and meth use, emphasizing the need for companies to conduct regular drug and background checks on their drivers the way that Road Scholar does.

Also, the need to know who is handling your freight is very important as well.  That’s one of the many benefits of choosing an asset-based carrier like Road Scholar over a broker.  When shipping via a third party, you do not know who your freight is passed onto or what their record is like. And if something goes wrong, like the above event, it is likely that your broker does not have cargo or liability insurance.  Read more about brokers vs. asset-based carriers at http://www.roadscholar.com/blog/trucking-companies-drift-from-third-party-reliance-as-capacity-issues-continue.

But what if was your freight that happened to be inside the above truck?  The good news for you, the shipper, is that you can see exactly where your freight is live by just turning on headline news, as you watch the truck transporting freight dodge and ram commuters and police officers.

The bad news, you now have to explain to your customer that their freight is not going to be delivered on time because the driver is currently on a rampage.  Not to mention the potential damage and contamination of your freight, resulting in large losses.

tracking

But does your freight have to make headline news for you to get a live stream of where it is at?  The answer is simply no.  Road Scholar has the technology to allow customers the ability to view live data on where their shipment is any given time, as well as the history of where it has been.

Learn more about Road Scholar Transport and how to keep your freight safe by visiting www.roadscholar.com.

Horrific Accident Shows Importance of Daily Maintenance Checks

Friday, February 4th, 2011

The last thing any truck driver wants is to be involved in an accident while on the road.  Especially an unexpected one like portrayed in this video:

truck accident

More than likely the above accident occurred due to bad mechanical problems such as a busted tie rod end or a bad steering component, which is why it is important to do daily maintenance checks.

That’s what Road Scholar does.  Out of the 22 years we’ve been in business, we never had a citation for a faulty piece of equipment.  Why is that?

One of the reasons is because Road Scholar does daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections on all of our trucks.  Drivers should routinely check items such as tires, wheels, lights, brakes, the engine, and mirrors.

If there is a problem, our drivers must report it to the safety department and get it repaired before they go on the road.  The main message here is not to take anything on the road that is unsafe.

By taking measures like the ones Road Scholar does, we can help improve safety on the road and prevent another accident like this from occurring.

Print out your trucking maintenance checklist at http://www.government-fleet.com/fc_resources/documents/truck-checklist.pdf.
