Today Celebrates World Cancer Day as Experts Predict Striking Statistics for Upcoming Years

Friday, February 4th, 2011

Are you noticing an usual number of people wearing red today?  It’s no surprise if you are since today marks Worldawareness trucks Cancer Day.

Every year on February 4th, the World Health Organization (WHO) encourages “Go Red for Women” day, spreading awareness to the 500,000 women affected with heart disease each year.  Do you have your red on?

If not, that’s alright; there are other ways to get involved by visiting http://www.goredforwomen.org/.  Money raised through “Go Red for Women” activities will be used towards research on heart disease.

We all know how serious cancer is and that it’s the leading cause of death.  But did you know this?  According to medicalnewstoday.com, “The World Health Organization estimates that 84 million people will die of cancer between 2005 and 2015 without intervention.”

With a striking number like this, Road Scholar Transport is doing their part to help spread awareness and stop cancer fatalities.  Operating awareness trailers for Alex’s Lemonade, The American Breast Cancer Foundation, The Children’s Tumor Foundation, Prostate Cancer Awareness, Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, The Children’s Cancer Recovery Foundation, and many more, Road Scholar is on the road to a cure.  Learn more and get involved at www.roadscholarawareness.com.

Cancer Deaths Shown to Decrease with this Common Over-the-Counter Medicine

Aspirin is used to relieve fever, headaches, pain, and…cancer fatalities?

According to US News, “certain compounds increase the risk of cancer,” however, studies found that taking an aspirin a day is found to reduce the number of deaths.

British researchers studied over 25,500 patients, finding that after several years, patients had an average 21% decrease of dying from “stomach, lung, and other solid tumor cancers decades later” (http://health.usnews.com/health-news/managing-your-healthcare/cancer/articles/2010/12/07/health-buzz-daily-aspirin-could-reduce-cancer-deaths.html).  Furthermore, taking a daily aspirin for 20 years lowers the risk of lung cancer deaths by 30%, colorectal cancer fatalities by 40%, and esophageal cancer deaths by 60%, the site notes.

Although taking an aspirin a day can be beneficial, it is not foolproof.  Long-term use can

“nearly double the risk of internal bleeding to one in every 2,000 to 3,000 people,” US News explains.

Road Scholar Transport supports initiatives leading to a cure for cancer, which is why we have several awareness trailers dedicated to cancer organizations including Alex’s Lemonade, the American Breast Cancer Foundation, the Children’s Tumor Foundation, Prostate Cancer Awareness, the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, and the Children’s Cancer Recovery Foundation.  Check out these trailers at www.roadscholarawareness.org.

The American Red Cross is at it Again

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

The American Red Cross’ Heart of Texas Area Chapter is hard at work.  With flood waters rising, the American Red Cross handed out food in Bell and Hill Counties for those families seeking shelter, according to kwtx.com.

With someone in America needing a blood transfusion every two seconds and 15 million blood donations collected each year, the American Red Cross accounts for 45% of the blood supply for almost 3,000 hospitals nationwide (http://www.givelife2.org/sponsor/quickfacts.asp).
