Truck Carrying Narcotics Leads to Abduction/Theft

Tuesday, December 14th, 2010

According to abc2news.com, a pharmaceutical truck transporting narcotics to a nearby pharmacy in West Baltimore was robbed yesterday in what is being called an “incredibly thought out robbery.”

The driver was transporting 87 crates full of narcotics (worth a very significant value) when three suspects, one in possession of a gun, surrounded and abducted the driver, stealing the truck, the article notes.

Thieves drove the truck to a precise location where they unloaded the cargo into another truck and took off, leaving the empty pharmaceutical truck and driver, who was unhurt, behind (http://www.abc2news.com/dpp/news/state/city-robbers-steal-truck-full-of-narcotics-during-pharmacy-delivery).

Abc2news informs that descriptions of the suspects have not yet been released but that this is thought to be a planned robbery since the thieves knew exactly what kind of freight the truck would be transporting and at what time.

When transporting a high value target, such as pharmaceuticals, it is very important to choose a carrier who will provide you with the security and service you need to keep your freight safe.  Road Scholar Transport’s tractor trailers are equipped with a Show Me feature that allows you to see exactly where your cargo is at any precise moment (down to the street level), along with electronic door monitoring alerting of every door opening/closing, as well as many other security features.  Road Scholar Transport also offers expedited shipping to ensure that your freight is delivered safely, on time, every time.

Millions of Dollars Worth the Famous Artwork Stolen in Cargo Theft

Tuesday, December 7th, 2010

Wow that Picasso painting looks like an original.  That’s because it might be.

Picasso

Picasso was famous for Cubism

According to artinfo.com, a truck transporting over $6.5 million worth the famous artwork was stolen from a warehouse in Getafe, Spain this weekend.

Among the artwork were artists/sculptors Picasso, Botero, Chillada, Gonzalo and Julio Gonzalez, Saura, and Marsi.

The 28 art pieces were being transported back from Germany where they were on loan, and were headed to their original locations spread throughout six galleries in Spain, the site notes.

Details are being withheld from the public in order to prevent misinformation about the artwork, thus tampering the investigation. What is known is that a surveillance video captured three hooded men breaking into the warehouse, thus sending off the alarm, and stealing the truck in which the keys were left in the glove compartment (http://www.artinfo.com/news/story/36517/hoods-drive-off-with-a-65-million-truckload-of-art-by-picasso-and-others-in-spain/).

It was not until Tuesday that the truck was found abandoned with the artwork missing, the site explains.

Good thing that in the United States we have Road Scholar TransportRoad Scholar Transport provides security features, such as SkyBitz and Qualcomm, on all of their tractor trailers, alerting of all electronic door openings and closures and tracking right down to the street level, so in the unfortunate event that something happens, trucks can be recovered in no time instead of days later.

The theft in Spain is believed to be an inside job, which is why Road Scholar Transport does routine background and drug tests on every new hire so that only the safest and trusted drivers are handling your freight.

Sites Lead to Sales of Stolen Trailers

Wednesday, October 6th, 2010

With the economy’s high prices, people are turning to quick and easy ways to save money.  But will the deal they got cost them more in the end?

That seems to be the case with trucking companies, who are turning to online sites such as Craigslist and E-bay to buy cheaper equipment.

According to KXXV-TV, companies are landing great deals on trailers only to find that instead of purchasing an affordable trailer, they were also buying a stolen one, one of the reasons why they couldn’t get a title.

You will never see one of Road Scholar Transport’s trailers listed on Craigslist.  With our extensive security features and brightly colored awareness trailers, thieves would have a hard time stealing our trucks and with aerial and ground tracking devices, have a harder time getting away.

We buy our tractor trailers from credible, well-known companies because when it comes to purchasing another tractor trailer, safety overrides cost.

E-bay is a popular buy and bid auction site with $2,000 worth the goods being bought per second on the site last year (http://www.ebayinc.com/who).

Craigslist is an online classifieds site which gathers 20 billion views each month (http://www.craigslist.org/about/factsheet).  Craigslist has been given a dangerous reputation, however, with news reports of killings, illegal postings, etc.

Gone in 90 Seconds

Road Scholar Transport90 seconds…that’s all it takes for thieves to steal your cargo.

According to Cargo Security Alliance, perpetrators will move onto softer targets if they cannot defeat a truck’s security system in 90 seconds or less.

When you think of lost or stolen freight, you think “cost.”  Not only do you suffer from inventory replacement costs, but the cost of recovery operations, restocking, recall , and worse, relationships/credibility with clients.  All this can happen in just 90 seconds.

One thing’s for sure, it would take a thief longer than that to break into one of Road Scholar Transport’s tractor trailers.

Road Scholar makes sure that each driver hired is legitimate.  We conduct a drug test on every new hire and again on 50% of drivers every year.  We also do ten year background checks to ensure that our drivers maintain a clean record.

Our property is setup with a digital surveillance system and with bright colors and roof tracking decals, our trucks are readily recognizable, making them harder to steal and easier to find.

If that’s not enough, we have bolt and cable seals, tamper evident tapes and seals, and truck, trailer, and container locks and seals to prevent theft.  Our cargo cam keeps an eye on your freight at all times to make sure nothing goes wrong.

Let’s not forget about tracking devices.  Road Scholar has you covered with covert assisted GPS cargo tracking and real-time tracking.  All of our reefers and power units are enabled with tracking devices such as SkyBitz, Qualcomm, and Airsis.  SkyBitz allows for electronic door monitoring, censoring and sending reports or alerts of door openings and closures.  Qualcomm provides panic buttons to prevent operation of the vehicle to ensure that a truck is not stolen.  In addition to that, Airsis gives a fleet map (down to the street level) that not only tells the location history, but current location of the tractor trailer.  These locations are reported every hour when moving and once every 24 hours when idle.

So in order to prevent a dent in your wallet and loss of credibility that you worked so long to build with your customers, consider using Road Scholar Transport for all your transporting needs.  For more information visit www.roadscholar.com.

Cargo Loss is Up, But Not for Road Scholar Transport

2010 marked a new year, new beginnings, and new…theft?

Stolen cargo is increasingly becoming a problem, with the total number of hijackings rising 5% between the months of January to June, according to an article on truckinginfo.com.  This increase continued over from last year, where there was also a rise in stolen goods.

So what’s the difference between last year and the current day?  Simple, the aims are more directed and specific.  Thieves know exactly what they want and how profitable it will be.  The two biggest targets are proved to be ‘multi-trailer thefts and large scale warehouse burglaries” (http://www.truckinginfo.com/news/news-detail.asp?news_id=71117).

How bad exactly is theft this year?  Think of it this way, the largest amount of cargo stolen that is known to date occurred this year when Enfield, Connecticut encountered $76 million taken in goods, truckinginfo.com notes.

Fortunately, Road Scholar Transport does not have to worry about their customer’s goods being hijacked.  With extensive security measures, clients can rest assure knowing that their freight is safe.  Some of these security features include:

-Qualcomm:  Features panic buttons to prevent operation of vehicle

-Navalock

-Electronic door monitoring

-Reefer and power unit tracking

-Roof decals for arial tracking

-Nextel direct connect

-Digital surveillance system of Road Scholar’s property

-Skybitz monitoring and tracking

-Driver background checks

-And much more
