NY Giants autographed ball

McMullen’s Restaurant on Market Street in Scranton, PA will be hosting A Miracle for Ava Event this Sunday, August 14th from 2-5 pm.

Ava is a four-year-old girl who experienced a seizure last November, followed by a major stroke which led to a coma.  She was immediately air-lifted to The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia where she remained for nearly three long months.  Fortunately, Ava woke from her coma but the doctors told her family that she had a Difuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), an inoperable brain tumor located in the middle of the brain stem.

In order to help Ava and her family, MaryBeth and Bridget Barrett, daughters of Road Scholar Transport owner Jim Barrett, assembled a committee to create an event in which all proceeds would be donated towards travel and medical expenses for Ava and her parents.

The event will include appetizers, soft drinks, draft beer, music, and your chance of winning great raffle baskets including:

-ZOOM Whitening from Hazzori Dental ($750 value)

-Toy Watch Donated by Boccardo’s  ($250 value)

-IPod Nano ($170 value)

-Autographed Bat and Ball Signed by the Entire Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees Team

-Douney & Bourke Beach Bag

-Gift Cards to Restaurants, Food Stores, etc.

-Lotto Baskets

-Family Fun Night

-And Much More!!!

Raffle tickets for the NY Giants Autographed Football, D & B Bag, and Toy Watch cost $5 per chance with all other raffles costing $5 for 3 tickets or 10 for $15.

Miracle for Ava Benefit Set for August, As Road Scholar Creates New Awareness Trailer for Pediatric Brain Cancer

Friday, July 1st, 2011

Her name is Ava Gioe and she is four years old.

Last November, Ava’s parents received the scare of their life, as they watched their child experience a seizure, followed by a major stroke which led to a coma.  Ava was immediately air-lifted to The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia where she remained for nearly three long months.  Fortunately, Ava was able awake from the coma but not without some bad news.  She had a Difuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), an inoperable brain tumor located in the middle of the brain stem.

Nearly 200 children, commonly aged between 5 and 10 years old, are diagnosed with DIPG a year, with a high fatality rate of 90% within 18 months and 97% within three years (http://www.reflectionsofgrace.org/index.php/diffuse-intrinsic-pontine-glioma-dipg.html).

Ava, however, is determined to survive and has already defied doctors’ odds by walking again and, on Christmas Day, speaking.

But as Ava’s parents do everything they can to provide treatment for their child, with Ava’s mother quitting her job to take care of her, medical bills are adding up.

Marybeth Barrett, daughter of Jim Barrett (owner of Road Scholar Transport) and her husband Mike, who’s son Brayden was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis, a progressive tumor disorder, can relate.  Fortunately, they were always able to pay his medical bills.  Realizing that not all families are lucky enough to provide for their sick children, she and her husband began to do their own fundraising, including a Christmas raffle which raised over $1300 to provide gifts for those children whose families could not afford to do so because of medical bills.

In doing these fundraisers, Marybeth met the Gioe family, who were holding an Easter Egg Hunt for Ava that her and her husband attended.  Inspired by Ava’s story, Marybeth, along with her sister Bridget, decided to hold a benefit for Ava.

When hearing about the fundraiser, many others joined in and volunteered to help in ava trailerthe creation and execution of the benefit, including Road Scholar Transport, who has chosen to create an awareness trailer dedicated to “A Miracle for Ava” as well as a cure for brain tumors.

Road Scholar Transport, a trucking company headquartered in Dunmore, PA, has already invested several thousands of dollars in creating awareness trailers for various organizations/causes including Autism Speaks, The American Breast Cancer Foundation, The American Red Cross, and Flight 93.  You can learn more about Road Scholar’s ‘Road to a Cure’ by visiting www.roadscholarawareness.org.

The Miracle for Ava benefit will be held on Sunday, August 14th from 2-5 pm at McMullen’s Restaurant on Market Street in Scranton, PA.  Tickets cost $20 per person (children 10 & under are free) which can be purchased at the door or bought in advance by contacting Marybeth at marybeth.barrett@roadscholar.com or Bridget at bridget.barrett@roadscholar.com or by calling 800-542-2301.

Christmas Fundraiser Allows Families to Provide Presents for Sick Children

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

It’s hard to imagine scrapping together every penny you have just to pay for your child’s medical bills.  It’s even harder to wake up on Christmas day and see the look on your sick child’s face because you couldn’t afford any gifts due to having to pay for their doctor’s visits, tests, and treatments.

Unfortunately, this is the case for many families, whose children have been diagnosed with serious illnesses that need constant medical attention.

Mary Beth Barrett, daughter of Jim Barrett (owner of Road Scholar Transport), can relate.  Her son Brayden was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis, a progressive tumor disorder, at the age of two.  Luckily, she was always able to pay his medical bills, while providing him and his siblings with gifts from Santa at Christmas time.  Now, she wanted to do something for those who weren’t as fortunate.

Mary Beth began an annual fundraiser three years ago to help raise money for these families to provide a decent Christmas for their children and show them that Santa really does exist.  It’s bad enough what they are going through, but to deprive a child of Christmas on top of that is unacceptable.

How can you help?  Raffle tickets are being sold for a chance to win one of seven great gift baskets.  Tickets are $2 each or three for $5.  The baskets are as follows:

Basket 1:  A bag full of Bath and Body Halloween Products

Basket 2:  Full-size Yankee Candle with Halloween themed jar topper and holder

Basket 3:  A laundry basket full of bathroom supplies and cleaning products, along with a $25 Home Depot gift card

Basket 4:  A $25 Olive Garden gift card, bottle of wine, bottle of OS black Sambuca, and two shot glasses

Basket 5:  Basket complete with children’s books

Basket 6:  Christmas themed basket

Basket 7:  Necklaces, rings, and bracelets from Lia Sophia.  Retail value over $400.
