The NFL Gets Ready to “Kick” Cystic Fibrosis as Road Scholar Hits the Zoo to Raise Awareness

Friday, April 29th, 2011

Jordan GrossKick CF with Jordan Gross is back for the fourth year to raise money for a cure for cystic fibrosis.

Carolina Panther Jordan Gross and wife Dana created the event when Jordan’s niece Brooklyn was diagnosed with the disease as a baby (http://southcharlotte.wbtv.com/news/community-spirit/cam-newton-makes-his-nfl-debut-kicking-cystic-fibrosis/62049).

Cystic Fibrosis is a hereditary condition that affects the lungs and digestive system, affecting nearly 30,000 people nationwide, most living an average lifespan of 35 years (www.cff.org).  There is currently no cure.

The event takes place at Providence High School in Charlotte, NC this Saturday and features NFL players “Cam Newton, Steve Smith, DeAngelo Williams, Armanti Edwards, Jason Baker, Tyler Brayton, Kevin Donnalley, Chris Harris, Ryan Kalil, Jimmy Clausen, Matt Moore, and Geoff Schwartz,” among others, the site explains.

The event has raised $200,000 in previous years and is estimated to raise another $75,000 this year.

Tickets cost only $10 with those under the age of four granted free admission.Cystic Fibrosis

And the NFL is not the only one fighting for a cure for Cystic Fibrosis.  Road Scholar Transport is rolling out their Cystic Fibrosis awareness truck at the Philadelphia Zoo on May 21st for the Philadelphia Great Strides Cystic Fibrosis Walk.

From 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., and for a small donation of fee of $15, individuals will be registered for the walk and granted free entrance into the zoo.  Take your family out for the day and help sponsor a good cause while doing so.

Visit http://www.cff.org/great_strides/ for more information on the event and be sure to check out Road Scholar Transport’s Cystic Fibrosis awareness truck and show your support for a cure!

Charity Causes Steelers Player to Lose Trademark Beard as Road Scholar Continues to Spread Awareness

Friday, February 25th, 2011

If you are a fan of the NFL than you are probably familiar with Pittsburg Steelers’ Brett Keisel, the defensive end that Brett Keiselwas featured several times during the Super Bowl because of his trademark beard.

But now, he may not be as easily recognizable.

Yesterday Keisel took part in a charity event benefitting Pittsburgh’s Children’s Hospital, in which he agreed to shave off his eight month old beard.

Although it wasn’t easy for Keisel to say goodbye, his fellow teammates had more than enough fun with it.  Teammates Hines Ward and Aaron Smith had a big grin on their face as they helped cut part of Keisel’s beard off.

After Ward and Smith had their fun, the rest of Keisel’s beard was removed by a barber.

The event ended up raising more than $30,000 for the Children’s Hospital…but with did Keisel have to say about all this?  “I feel naked.  I feel like I’m 15” (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/shutdown_corner/post/Brett-Keisel-shaves-his-beard-for-charity?urn=nfl-326394).

Will Keisel grow his beard back?  According to him, when the right time comes it will reappear.

Like Keisel, Road Scholar Transport is dedicated to helping charities in need, such as the Children’s Cancer Recovery Foundation, part of our 10 Million Miles to a Cure Awareness Campaign.  Check out the other great charities Road Scholar is spreading awareness for at www.roadscholarawareness.org.

NFL Refuses to Allow Players to Participate in Charity Event

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

Celebrities from all over gathered round to participate in a charity poker tournament benefitting the Starkey Hearing Foundation and Pros for Africa, which help hearing impaired children in Africa.

Adrian Peterson

Adrian Peterson

Singers including Jordan Sparks, comedian Steve Martin, actors, and athletes showed up at the Golden Nugget Casino in Las Vegas to play their hand, paying a $2,000 entry fee.  But for thirty NFL players, it wasn’t in their game plan.

That’s right, the NFL refused to allow some of NFL’s favorites (including Adrian Peterson and Larry Fitzgerald) from playing, staying firm on their no gambling policy.  The problem with this is that 100% of the proceeds were being donated to the charity…not going to the player’s own pockets.  Therefore, the players had no choice but to watch, some choosing to pay the $2,000 entry fee anyway as their contribution.

Although the NFL refused to allow its players the chance to help out a good cause, it has been known to donate and spread awareness for charities ever year, including The American Breast Cancer Foundation and Autism Speaks, both of which Road Scholar Transport has awareness trailers for.

Road Scholar and the NFL Tackle Breast Cancer On and Off the Field

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

For years now, NFL teams have been huddling up to tackle breast cancer.  Take the Philadelphia Eagles for example.  Every year they participate in the Tackling Breast Cancer (TBC) campaign.  Last year, proceeds from Breast Cancer merchandise sold during two of the Eagles’ games, as well as online, profited the Jefferson Breast Care Center.

The Philadelphia Eagles is not the only team pushing their way through the field in goal of a cure, teams such as the Titans, Steelers, Vikings, Giants, Cowboys, and many others, competed in last year’s NFL Breast Cancer Awareness Games.  In support of a cure, coaches and staff wore pink ribbon pins, sold Madden NFL 09 Pink video games whose proceeds went to the Deanna Favre HOPE Foundation, passed out pink ribbons at the entrance gates, and many players participated by wearing pink gloves and shoes.

The NFL is not the only organization taking strides against breast cancer.  Road Scholar Transport has been spreading awareness nationwide, not only for the American Breast Cancer Foundation, but for Alex’s Lemonade, Autism Speaks, the Children’s Tumor Foundation, Prostate Cancer Awareness, International RETT Syndrome Foundation, St. Joseph’s Center, American Foundation for the Blind, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, The Flight 93 National Memorial, and American Red Cross.

Through the use of rolling billboards, and your business, Road Scholar Transport has vowed to travel 10 million miles in order to help spread awareness of the many diseases and conditions battling innocent lives today.  Visit http://www.roadscholar.com/ourcharities.html for more information and pictures of our awareness trailers.
