Pharmaceutical Company Suffers $4 Million Cargo Loss after Theft

Tuesday, June 21st, 2011

Last month, nearly $66,000 worth of products was stolen in a Pfizer Pharmaceuticals shipment destined for a CVS facility in Rhode Island.  Now, thieves have struck again, this time in Louisville, Kentucky.Abbott Labs

Last Friday, Carnes Trucking Co. received a shipment from a UPS facility in Louisville, loaded with diabetes products manufactured by Abbott Laboratories.

While the load sat at the Carnes’ facility over the weekend, awaiting its destination in Aurora, California, the truck was stolen.

According to police, the tractor trailer and its cargo were discovered missing at 2 a.m. Sunday morning.

As securingpharma.com explains, thieves made away with 37 pallets of glucose test strips, lancets, and other diabetes testing equipment, valuing nearly $4 million.

Although $4 million dollars is a lot of money, Abbott Labs’ estimated cargo loss is actually slightly lower than Freightwatch International’s U.S. average of $5 million per load.  But pharmaceutical cargo loss can far exceed the $5 million mark as well.  Take last year’s Eli Lilly warehouse theft which resulted in $75 million worth the psychiatric drugs being stolen!

Not only do manufacturers suffer large monetary losses from their stolen shipments, but pharmaceutical theft triggers consumer alerts as well, since these medications can be tampered with and result in health problems when ingested.

That’s why Freightwatch is warning shippers to “review their facility and in-transit security programs” (http://www.securingpharma.com/40/articles/965.php).

Help Get the CCA Awareness Truck to its Retreat This Weekend

Monday, June 20th, 2011

“Isolated,” a word that children with craniofacial deformities use to describe how they feel.  But the Children’s Craniofacial Association (CCA)’s annual retreat helps remove that word and replace it with “togetherness.”

Children's Craniofacial Foundation

This year marks the 21st annual Cher’s Family Retreat.  According to http://ccakids.com, the retreat got its origin from Mask Cher, who has a child with a craniofacial deformity.  Cher wanted to raise awareness for the CCA, like Road Scholar Transport does with its awareness trucks, traveling to Washington, D.C. during Craniofacial Awareness Week and interacting with the children and their families.  During this time, parents expressed that Cher’s “get togethers” with the children, often bringing them to her room to be with others who had similar deformities, allowed them for the first time to be around children like themselves.

Realizing that isolation was a strong feeling that craniofacial children shared, Cher decided to hold a retreat each year for kids to freely express their problems and experiences with others.

The retreat has been held all across the country and takes place at the Galt House Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky this year from June 23-26.  Those wishing to register can do so by contacting Annie Reeves at areeves@ccakids.com or via phone 1-800-535-3643.

So where does Road Scholar Transport come in?

One day, Jim Barrett was meeting with a man at a pizza restaurant who heard about Road Scholar’s awareness program and was requesting a trailer for the Children’s Craniofacial Foundation be made.  Barrett, being extremely busy at the time, arranged for them to meet again in a month or two to discuss it.  As the two of them were walking out of the empty restaurant, however, in walked a girl who clearly had a facial disability.  Barrett’s jaw quickly dropped.

“It was a divine message.  That was not an accident that that girl walked in there,” he said.  Barrett turned towards the man he had went to lunch with and stated, “It’s not a question of IF anymore.  We ARE going to do it.”  And the Children’s Craniofacial Foundation trailer was soon created on behalf of Jeremy Dale, whose father is the chair of the foundation.  “Jeremy was the happiest kid in the world when he saw that truck and I couldn’t help but cry,” Jim reflected.CCA

Road Scholar would like to continue spreading happiness, along with awareness, by having the Children’s Craniofacial Association truck appear at this year’s retreat, but to do so, we need your help.

If you or anyone your know has LTL or truckload freight going to the Louisville, KY area on June 23rd through June 26th, we can deliver with our Children’s Craniofacial Association truck and make an appearance at the retreat.  Visit www.roadscholar.com to request a quote today or call 800-542-2301.

What do you think of Cher’s idea of holding a retreat to bring children with similar craniofacial problems together each year?

Rising Fuel Prices and Cheap Rates Have Trucking Companies Closing Their Doors

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011

With the price of diesel surging and carriers offering cheap rates in order to maintain business, it’s no wonder whyBrandt many trucking companies are closing their doors for good.  As was the case Tuesday for one trucking company.

Brandt Truck Line, who has been in business for over 80 years servicing the Kentucky, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Indiana areas with LTL service, broadcasted on their website yesterday that they were closing their doors stating:

“We regret to announce that Brandt Truck Line ceased operation effective 3/22/11.  We made no pickups Tuesday and will do our best to deliver any freight that is still in our system.  Thank you for your past business.”

The company began in 1923 transporting kerosene by mule and later specialized in LTL (less-than-truckload) service in the 1980s, but their freight was “not enough to fill a truck on their own” (http://www.pantagraph.com/business/local/article_fe0b3bb6-54cd-11e0-80c6-001cc4c002e0.html).

Several drivers and office employees in the Bloomington location were shocked when they found out that the company they worked for was closing immediately.  Nicolet Souza, a customer service rep, was one of them, whose boss approached her and told her that they “were done,” which Souza took as “a shock,” The Pantagraph notes.

But the company’s closing wasn’t a shock for all employees.

According to one person, who posted a comment on truckingboards.com under the codename “wizzard-100,” it was no surprise that Brandt Truck Line decided to cease operations.

Working at the company until yesterday, when he/she and other employees found out that they no longer had a job through an article they found online, “wizzard-100” states that “Brandt’s big problem was they didn’t spend any money on maintenance.  It didn’t get fixed until it broke.  Then it was fixed using pulled parts from other units that were down.  Bubble gum and bailing wire repairs will only go so far…They also hauled real cheap freight for too long and it finally bit them in the a**. Guess I’ll just file for unemployment and take my time finding another job” (http://www.truckingboards.com/forum/trucking-industry-news/11034-brandt-truck-line-closes-down.html).

Unfortunately, this is the case for many trucking companies who offer bottom-feeder rates in order to get business.  The problem is, as “wizzard-100” notes, you get what you pay for.  If you want low rates, you are also getting trucks that are not maintained and easily prone to breaking down or causing an accident.

With Road Scholar Transport, you will receive competitive rates for a quality service.  We can assure you that our trucks undergo daily maintenance, ensuring only the safest equipment on the road when shipping your LTL and TL freight.

Here’s a fact, Road Scholar has never been cited for a piece of faulty equipment in an accident, which demonstrates the full attention we give to our trucks and equipment.

If you want to ship with a company you can trust to give you a fair price for the quality of service they provide, then go to www.roadscholar.com today to chat with an online transportation expert or get a quote.

How would you feel if the company you shipped with suddenly shut down and left you stranded with a dock full of freight?

Exactly How High Are Diesel Prices?

Tuesday, December 28th, 2010

Diesel prices are creeping higher and higher, ranging from costs of $3.15 a gallon in some states to $3.60 in others.  diesel fuelAlthough these prices are the highest they have been in two years, compare that with diesel rates back in October of 2008 when they reached almost $5-per-gallon.

According to truckinginfo.com, the average diesel fuel price of $3.294 is an impact of higher crude oil prices, which are at $91 per barrel and are predicted to increase to $100 per barrel next year (http://www.truckinginfo.com/news/news-detail.asp?news_id=72539).

The following are the current average diesel prices in each state provided by http://www.etrucker.com/apps/promiles/fuelprices.asp.

Alabama Trucking Company Ordered to Cease Operations

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

A truck driver crashed in Kentucky last March, resulting in 11 fatalities, among those an infant.  That driver was Kenneth Laymon.

As of June, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) finished auditing Hester, the Alabama trucking company responsible for the accident, and pulled them off the road, truckinginfo.com notes.  As the site states, it was not until recently that this information was released to the public, when a newspaper was granted the information through the Freedom of Information Act.

According to the reports, Laymon was on his cell phone at the time the accident occurred and investigators do not know how long he was operating the vehicle non-stop before he crashed, since “the truck was not equipped with an electronic onboard recorder, and the driver’s logbook was destroyed in the fire” (http://www.truckinginfo.com/news/news-detail.asp?news_id=71569).

It would come as no surprise if Laymon didn’t keep a logbook anyways.  According to nky.com, in a two year time span, Hester received 166 violations, 39 of which were for driving too long without rest and 21 for not maintaining their log or for false entries.

The site also notes that Hester’s inspection rating was marked at 88.4% on a scale where 100 is the worst and anything from 75% on is “considered deficient” (http://nky.cincinnati.com/article/AB/20100331/NEWS0103/303310014/Alabama-trucking-firm-Hester-Inc-had-poor-safety-record-before-Int-65-crash).

With Road Scholar Transport, you don’t have to worry about safety violations or an ill-equipped truck.  All of our trucks contain tracking devices so that we know exactly where our drivers are at all times, when and where they stopped and for how long, and much more.

Our drivers operate with the upmost in safety and performance, are Hazmat certified, and the best part is, Road Scholar Transport has a proven record of less than 0.0001% in damage claims every year!
