Road Scholar Transport Awareness Program

Road Scholar owner Jim Barrett was meeting with a man one day at a pizza restaurant who was requesting a trailer for the Children’s Craniofacial Foundation.  Being extremely busy at the time, Barrett arranged for them to meet again in a month or two to discuss it.  But as the two of them were walking out of the empty restaurant, in walked a girl who clearly had a facial disability.  Believed to be a divine message that this girl had walked in there, Barrett immediately turned towards the man he had lunch with and told him that it was not a question anymore.  Road Scholar was going to do the trailer.  The Children’s Craniofacial Foundation trailer was soon created on behalf of Jeremy Dale, whose father is the chair of the foundation.

Road Scholar Transport to Donate Big Surprise at Next Thursday’s Marley’s Mission Event

Friday, September 2nd, 2011

Road Scholar Transport will release a big surprise next week at an event raising funds for Marley’s Mission.

Marley's Mission

On July 5, 2009, while at home with her family in Taylor, Pennsylvania, a 5 year old girl was brutally attacked in her own room by a complete stranger.  Police immediately responded and captured the girl’s attacker.  He has been prosecuted and is serving a sentence of life in prison”.   Immediately after the arrest, the outpouring of support was overwhelming.  A fund was established for the benefit of the little girl and her family.  It was named the “Marley’s Fund”.  Marley was the name of the little girl’s pet guinea pig.

With these funds, the family moved from their home to try to start a new life.  As a long standing wish of their daughter, the family also bought the little girl a horse named Strawberry.

After limited success with traditional therapy, a horse was infused into the little girl’s therapy regimen.  Immediately, a recognizable change was witnessed.  For the first time since the attack, the mother of this young girl saw a glimmer of her daughter not seen since July 5, 2009.

It was at this time, the girl’s mother, April Loposky, realized that if a horse can have such a dramatic and positive benefit on her child, why couldn’t it help other children who have experienced trauma.

And Marley’s Mission was born

Horse

Marley’s Mission, located in Lake Ariel, PA, is home to several horses and riding areas, including an indoor arena in case of bad weather, offering children free therapy.  Interacting with the horse, trauma therapists on site found that children rebuilt their confidence and communication methods by finding companionship in the horse.

Being a non-profit organization, Marley’s Mission is able to provide free services through funding, both private and public.  One such fundraiser will occur next Thursday, September 8th, at Pizza Uno on 3905 Commerce Blvd. in Dickson City from 5 pm. to 9 pm.  By going to http://www.marleysmission.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/UNO-Event-Sept-8-2011.pdf, people attending the event can print off a certificate in which 15% of your purchases (both dine in and take-out) will go towards helping Marley’s Mission.

Plus, Road Scholar Transport will be at the event with a big surprise!  Come to Pizza Uno on Sept. 8th to find out what we have in store!

Miracle for Ava Benefit Set for August, As Road Scholar Creates New Awareness Trailer for Pediatric Brain Cancer

Friday, July 1st, 2011

Her name is Ava Gioe and she is four years old.

Last November, Ava’s parents received the scare of their life, as they watched their child experience a seizure, followed by a major stroke which led to a coma.  Ava was immediately air-lifted to The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia where she remained for nearly three long months.  Fortunately, Ava was able awake from the coma but not without some bad news.  She had a Difuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), an inoperable brain tumor located in the middle of the brain stem.

Nearly 200 children, commonly aged between 5 and 10 years old, are diagnosed with DIPG a year, with a high fatality rate of 90% within 18 months and 97% within three years (http://www.reflectionsofgrace.org/index.php/diffuse-intrinsic-pontine-glioma-dipg.html).

Ava, however, is determined to survive and has already defied doctors’ odds by walking again and, on Christmas Day, speaking.

But as Ava’s parents do everything they can to provide treatment for their child, with Ava’s mother quitting her job to take care of her, medical bills are adding up.

Marybeth Barrett, daughter of Jim Barrett (owner of Road Scholar Transport) and her husband Mike, who’s son Brayden was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis, a progressive tumor disorder, can relate.  Fortunately, they were always able to pay his medical bills.  Realizing that not all families are lucky enough to provide for their sick children, she and her husband began to do their own fundraising, including a Christmas raffle which raised over $1300 to provide gifts for those children whose families could not afford to do so because of medical bills.

In doing these fundraisers, Marybeth met the Gioe family, who were holding an Easter Egg Hunt for Ava that her and her husband attended.  Inspired by Ava’s story, Marybeth, along with her sister Bridget, decided to hold a benefit for Ava.

When hearing about the fundraiser, many others joined in and volunteered to help in ava trailerthe creation and execution of the benefit, including Road Scholar Transport, who has chosen to create an awareness trailer dedicated to “A Miracle for Ava” as well as a cure for brain tumors.

Road Scholar Transport, a trucking company headquartered in Dunmore, PA, has already invested several thousands of dollars in creating awareness trailers for various organizations/causes including Autism Speaks, The American Breast Cancer Foundation, The American Red Cross, and Flight 93.  You can learn more about Road Scholar’s ‘Road to a Cure’ by visiting www.roadscholarawareness.org.

The Miracle for Ava benefit will be held on Sunday, August 14th from 2-5 pm at McMullen’s Restaurant on Market Street in Scranton, PA.  Tickets cost $20 per person (children 10 & under are free) which can be purchased at the door or bought in advance by contacting Marybeth at marybeth.barrett@roadscholar.com or Bridget at bridget.barrett@roadscholar.com or by calling 800-542-2301.

NFL and NBA Merchandise among Items Stolen From Flight 93 Fundraiser

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

The fundraiser will go on after burglars broke into an Akron, OH office building which was storing items meant to be auctioned off to raise money for the Flight 93 memorial.

The burglary occurred between Sunday night and Monday morning when thieves put a hole through the drywall and entered the room, according to an article on pittsburghlive.com.

A number of items were stolen including autographed sports memorabilia such as a signed Jerome Bettis football and LeBron James basketball.

Also stolen were 30 gift cards, wine, cash, jewelry, a credit card, digital camera equipment, and seven silver Flight 93 medallions (http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/news/regional/s_712941.html).

The medallions were among sixty made, distributed to those who lost loved ones on the flight and to President Bush and his wife, along with Dick Cheney.

According to the site, the medallions depict Pennsylvania’s mountains and the bald eagle, as well as the names of all those on Flight 93 that day.

Road Scholar Transport has worked with the HALO Foundation to commemorate the victims of Flight 93 with our Flight 93 awareness trailer, featuring the names of all 40 on board.
