Monday, November 14th, 2011

make your dog famousThis is the last week to enter Road Scholar’s Gone to the Dogs contest for a chance to make your pooch famous!

The contest is broken up into two parts…

Photo Contest

It’s time to dig through those photos and fetch us the cutest picture of your pooch.

Your dog’s image will be uploaded to Road Scholar’s awareness site (http://www.roadscholarawareness.org/awareness-campaign/dog-contest/) for dog lovers such as yourself to vote on!

Get those tails wagging because the top ten dogs with the most votes will have their pictures featured on Road Scholar’s nationwide tractor trailer.

Have a litter of pups?  Then submit a photo of each.  We know it’s hard to pick a single picture of your pooch but we can’t choose either so please limit entries to one photo per dog.

Rules and regulations for entering the photo portion of the contest are as follows:

-Pictures must be sent to kristina.brown@roadscholar.com as a file attachment.  TIF, JPEG, GIF, BMP, and PNG are accepted formats.

-Please submit the highest-resolution photo possible…we want the best quality picture of your dog for truck!

-The picture will be processed and posted to the voting site.  The submitter of the photo will be notified when the picture is available for voting.

-Dog pictures only please.

-Picture must contain a single dog and no other animals or people.

-By submitting the picture you are giving consent for Road Scholar Transport to post the picture on the voting site.

-Road Scholar Transport reserves the right when necessary to resize or crop a picture to fit on the voting site.

-Road Scholar Transport will review all pictures and will not post inappropriate photos.

-Picture submissions will be accepted until 5pm EST November 18th.  Voting on a picture can start as soon as it is available on the voting site.

-The voting period will end 5pm EST November 18th.

-The top 10 vote getters will be selected to have the picture of their dog on the new trailer.

Slogan Contest

You may already be familiar with Road Scholar Transport’s 10 Million Miles to a Cure awareness program featuring trucks dedicated to raising awareness for causes such as Cystic Fibrosis, Stop Bullying, and The American Breast Cancer Foundation (view all causes at www.roadscholarawareness.org).  If so, then you know that each truck carries a relevant slogan to the featured organization, such as “On the Road to Granting Wishes” for Make-A-Wish Foundation or “On the Road to Solving the Puzzle” for Autism Speaks.

We now need a clever, fitting slogan for our new dog trailer and we want your ideas!  In fact, we will reward the person with the best phrase by not only putting their slogan on our truck but fetching them a $25 gift card to Olive Garden and a $25 dollar gift card for PetSmart.  That’s $50 worth the gift cards for just a few words!

So what are you waiting for?  Stick out those tongues, say cheese, and submit your photos and slogans to Kristina.brown@roadscholar.com by November 18th!

Winners will be posted on Road Scholar’s social media sites (Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn) and will also be notified via e-mail.

Thanks for entering and good luck!

Missing Daughter’s Family Create Campaign Calling on Truck Drivers for Help

Thursday, July 21st, 2011

Imagine receiving a phone call that your daughter has disappeared.  Now imagine search efforts being called off and three months going by without any trace of her.  Do you start to lose hope?  For the Bobo family, the answer is no.

Their 20-year-old daughter Holly disappeared on April 13th, 2011 from their Tennessee home.  The nursing student was reported missing by her brother Clint when he saw her being led into the woods near their house by a man in hunting attire.  At first, her brother assumed that it was her boyfriend, but when he found traces of blood, he became worried.

As the weeks passed on, search parties were called off, only finding Holly’s lunchbox and a few other items belonging to her.  The state approved a $50,000 reward, which is now up to $85,000 due to the family’s efforts, for the safe return of Holly.  Unfortunately, with over 300 credible leads, the man who took Holly is still unknown.

One day shy of her April 13th disappearance three months ago, Holly’s family launched the Holly Bobo Across America Campaign.

Holly Bobo

According to fleetowner.com, the campaign idea began when a woman who was friends with Amerawear Corp. owner Steve Hinson on Facebook, mentioned the idea of placing Holly’s picture on tractor trailers since they travel across the country and could reach a greater audience as well as provoke greater search efforts.

The idea took off and several truck decals and car window clings featuring Holly were sold to over a hundred trucking companies who wanted to help the cause.

You can help too by adding a decal to your fleet.

Truck decals cost $25.50 plus tax and shipping and are 2×3 feet while window clings measure 8×10 in. and are $5.50 plus tax and shipping (http://fleetowner.com/management/news/family-truckers-help-tennessee-0720/).

Items can be purchased via phone at 866-363-1140 (Steve Hinson).  Those writing checks can send it to:

First Bank

Attn: Rebecca

450 Tennessee Ave.

South Parsons, TN 38363

Checks are asked to be made out to “Holly Bobo Across America.”

Road Scholar’s Awareness Truck to Attend Country Concert & Motorcycle Ride Benefitting Cystic Fibrosis

Thursday, July 14th, 2011

Paige Ceaser

Meet Paige Ceaser.  Like Richard Weiss, who sparked the trademark “65 roses” when he couldn’t pronounce his condition, Paige is a young four-year-old girl who has been diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis at birth.

Knowing that there is no cure YET for the hereditary condition affecting nearly 1,000 additional individuals a year, Paige’s family took immediate action, spreading awareness and hosting events to raise money for a cure.  And this year is not any different.

The American Legion Post 781 will once again play host to the 4th annual country concert and motorcycle ride benefitting cystic fibrosis.

The event will take place on Sunday, August 21st at the American Legion Post 781 in Mountain Top, PA and will feature two main events.

The first is a 65 mile motorcycle ride beginning at the Wilkes-Barre Kmart, proceeding through Conyingham Valley and ending at the American Legion Post 781.  Those wishing to participate in the ride can register from 9:30 am to 11:30 am at the Wilkes-Barre Kmart with the cost being $10 per person.  Individuals will also receive coffee, donuts, and water from Dunkin Donuts with the first 200 registrants receiving thank you bags.

Last year the motorcycle run was rained out, but regardless, the event still raised $5000 with nearly $30,000 throughout the last few years.

The second main event features a concert given by Kartune, Farmers Daughter, Jeanne Zano, Tommy Guns, Lena & South Street, Big Carl and Sundance and Crystal Martinex, who also has Cystic Fibrosis.

The concert starts at 1 pm with admission costing $5.00 and those 12 and under granted entrance for free.

But that’s not all.  There will also be food and drinks, including a $5.00 pig roast meal and $1 Coors and soda, raffles, vendors, games, face painting, temporary tattoos, pony rides, Young’s Funny Farm, and more.

National Transportation Week Kicks Off

Monday, May 16th, 2011

Yesterday marked National Transportation Week (NTW), a time to celebrate and learn more about the important roleNational Transportation Week transportation plays in the U.S.

NTW was dubbed a national event by President John F. Kennedy back in 1962 and takes place each May (http://www.visitdetroit.com/index.php/events/natl-transportation-week).

Running from May 15th this year through the 21st, states across the country hold events discussing issues in the transportation system, honoring our drivers, educating the youth of America, and spreading awareness.

More than 9,000 members of The Association for Global Logistics and Transportation (NDTA), “a non-political, non-profit educational association of government, military, and industry professionals dedicated to fostering a strong and efficient global logistics and transportation system in support of national security,” will meet to discuss issues in the transportation system (http://www.ndtahq.com/events_national_trans_week.htm#).

Not only will there be a serious discussion on critical topics but also sets aside time to celebrate those members of the transportation industry.

One set of drivers honored are those in the trucking industry, which make up the backbone of America and is accountable for about 70 percent of the freight transported each year.

Appreciation towards these drivers and their hard work are given in many ways, one of them being through educating the younger generation on the importance of this occupation, with this year’s topic focusing on workforce issues, ntweek.org notes.

By educating the youth, NTW hopes to open their eyes to the industry and pursue a job in this field in the future, especially with the current driver shortage and capacity issues facing the transportation industry today.  As the Federal Highway Administration’s Joseph S. Toole notes, “There is probably no other issue that reaches across all the modes [of transportation] in both the public and private sectors.  This is an issue that very much unites all of the transportation community” (http://www.ntweek.org/).

Those wishing to apply for a truck driving career that allows you to see new sights and be appreciated for what you do can do so at http://www.roadscholar.com/employment.php.

NTW also holds events across the nation to spread awareness for the transportation industry.  A listing of dates and events can be found at http://www.ndtahq.com, http://www.ntweek.org/, or by visiting your local chapter.

The NFL Gets Ready to “Kick” Cystic Fibrosis as Road Scholar Hits the Zoo to Raise Awareness

Friday, April 29th, 2011

Jordan GrossKick CF with Jordan Gross is back for the fourth year to raise money for a cure for cystic fibrosis.

Carolina Panther Jordan Gross and wife Dana created the event when Jordan’s niece Brooklyn was diagnosed with the disease as a baby (http://southcharlotte.wbtv.com/news/community-spirit/cam-newton-makes-his-nfl-debut-kicking-cystic-fibrosis/62049).

Cystic Fibrosis is a hereditary condition that affects the lungs and digestive system, affecting nearly 30,000 people nationwide, most living an average lifespan of 35 years (www.cff.org).  There is currently no cure.

The event takes place at Providence High School in Charlotte, NC this Saturday and features NFL players “Cam Newton, Steve Smith, DeAngelo Williams, Armanti Edwards, Jason Baker, Tyler Brayton, Kevin Donnalley, Chris Harris, Ryan Kalil, Jimmy Clausen, Matt Moore, and Geoff Schwartz,” among others, the site explains.

The event has raised $200,000 in previous years and is estimated to raise another $75,000 this year.

Tickets cost only $10 with those under the age of four granted free admission.Cystic Fibrosis

And the NFL is not the only one fighting for a cure for Cystic Fibrosis.  Road Scholar Transport is rolling out their Cystic Fibrosis awareness truck at the Philadelphia Zoo on May 21st for the Philadelphia Great Strides Cystic Fibrosis Walk.

From 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., and for a small donation of fee of $15, individuals will be registered for the walk and granted free entrance into the zoo.  Take your family out for the day and help sponsor a good cause while doing so.

Research Finds New Combination to be More Effective in Treating Drug Resistance in Cystic Fibrosis Patients

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

A recent study conducted by McMaster’s Centre for Microbial Chemical Biology researchers Eric Brown, Gerry Wright and Brian Coombes, discovered a new drug combination that could give hope to cystic fibrosis patients everywhere.

McMaster’s Centre for Microbial Chemical Biology

Researchers found that the antiobiotic minocycline, used to treat bacteria infections, becomes more effective when combined with loperamide, otherwise known to treat diarrhea, especially against bacteria that is highly resistant to medication, such as P. aeruginosa (http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/223246.php).

As Medical News Today notes, research is being geared towards creating better treatments for infection instead of tackling the problem of antibiotic resistance, which the new combination is aimed at.

Bacterial infections commonly occur in cystic fibrosis patients, due to a gene defect that creates a dysfunctional protein, resulting in a thick build up of mucus affecting the lungs (http://www.medicinenet.com/cystic_fibrosis/article.htm).

There is currently no cure for cystic fibrosis but medication, therapy, and proper nutrition can help prolong a patient’s life.  That is not to say that there will never be a cure.

cystic fibrosis

That’s why Road Scholar Transport continues to help spread awareness with the hope that one day, a cure will be found and thousands of lives saved.  Road Scholar’s Cystic Fibrosis Foundation truck, displaying all 65 roses trademark of 4-year-old Richard Weiss who mistakenly called his condition “65 Roses,” is traveling the nation, delivering freight and stopping at events near you.  Help us continue to spread awareness by visiting www.roadscholar.com today to keep the freight moving.

VX-770 Drug Treats Common Cystic Fibrosis Defect, First of its Kind

Monday, November 22nd, 2010

Cystic Fibrosis affects one out of 2,500 Americans, half of those cases resulting in fatalities by the age of 30 (http://www.cfri.org/news/95spring/cf195s.html).  Now, there may be a way to reverse the disease.

According to BioNews, researchers have developed a drug that would treat CFTR mutations commonly causing the disease.

The drug, VX-770, works by “increasing the activity of the chloride ion channel,” which is defected by the mutation, leading to excess “mucus within the lungs and making the body more prone to infections” (http://www.bionews.org.uk/page_82698.asp).

The study selected patients with a certain mutation (G551D-CFTR), one of many mutations known to cause cystic fibrosis, finding improvements in the patient’s lung and ion channel function when given the drug, the site notes.

Further testing must be conducted to conclude VX-770’s effects.

As we move towards more effective treatments for cystic fibrosis, we do not stop trying to find a cure.  That’s why Road Scholar Transport is on the road 24/7, spreading awareness of the disease with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation awareness trailer, featuring the organization’s trademark…65 roses.
