Are you getting robbed by a broker? Then again, maybe you just don’t know it yet. As was the case with one broker
who has been scamming people out of their money for the past decade.
Alejandra Mascorro was accused last Tuesday (January 26th) of wire and bankruptcy fraud, leading to his arrest on Wednesday (January 27th).
According to themonitor.com, Mascorro worked for various brokerage companies throughout the years, one of them being Doria, where he was employed from September 2004 to May 2009.
During this time, he recruited people who had been given fake driver’s licenses and addresses in order to cash in numerous $1,000 checks which were supposed to be given to drivers to cover their road expenses, the site notes.
This wasn’t the only company that Mascorro robbed whilst employed at.
At a McAllen brokerage company from May 2009 to March 2010, Mascorro had the company’s customers make out their checks to Ardilla Enterprises Inc., a pretend independent brokerage company he created in which hundreds of thousands of dollars were placed into Mascorro’s account (http://www.themonitor.com/news/mcallen-46805-arrested-wire.html).
To cover up his actions, Mascorro paid his employment company using part of the money customers sent to his make believe company so that it appeared as if he was doing his job.
Mascorro can receive “up to 20 years in prison without parole and a fine of up to $250,000” based on one charge of bankruptcy fraud for misrepresentations on his 2008 income, as well as five charges of wire fraud, themonitor.com explains.
Save yourself the hassle of being caught up in fraudulent acts by skipping the broker and shipping with a company you know and trust…Road Scholar Transport. View Road Scholar Transport’s certifications and get online rates and quotes fast by visiting www.roadscholar.com.

Once again, fraud does not pay; a lesson that one man is learning the hard way.
Marlon Louis Danner, owner of two Minnesota trucking companies (Danner Inc. and Bull Dog Leasing Inc.) developed a clever scheme to rob his employees out of getting money owed to them by MnDOT. Little did he realize that he would be caught not long after.
Danner was forced to distribute $185,000 to 27 of his drivers after he was found to have underpaid them for a project they were working on between the years 2008 and 2009.
In order to prove that he did pay the drivers back, Danner sent the checks to MnDOT, who then mailed them to the drivers in March.
Prior to receiving the checks, numerous drivers received a phone call from Danner saying that there had been a mistake (they were not underpaid), and therefore, had to give the checks back.
Danner accepted over $120,000 worth the returned checks from March-May, providing phony receipts for fuel, repairs, etc. to cover up his scheme (http://www.myfoxtwincities.com/dpp/news/St.-Paul-Truck-Company-Owner-Faces-205-Years-in-Jail-dec-22-2010).
According to myfoxtwincities.com, Danner now stands trial awaiting the verdict on “six counts of wire fraud, four counts of mail fraud and one count of making a false statement,” which could result in 205 years in jail.

Noël Perry
According to FTR Associates’ Noël Perry, the transportation industry has been demonstrating signs of recovery from a weak economy. But how does the 2011 outlook fan out?
In an article on etrucker.com, Perry predicts that freight will increase to an average of 4-7 percent, but capacity will do just the opposite.
With companies reluctant to expand capacity, along with the recent CSA (Comprehensive Safety Analysis) 2011 and hours of service (HOS) regulations, capacity issues and driver shortages are expected, the article notes.
The shortage of trucks is expected to grow from 100,000 units to 250,000 next year and increase to 400,000 in 2012, its amount doubling the last shortage back in 2004 (http://www.etrucker.com/apps/news/article.asp?id=86066).
The HOS proposal is considered an issue. Less hours that a driver is allowed to travel translates into a need for more drivers in order to fulfill deliveries. Perry expects a shortage of 150,000 drivers next year, which could grow to 400,000 by 2012, etrucker.com explains.

Every now and then, you will see a trucking company who is family run and oriented, such as Road Scholar Transport, and then you have GS Transport…

Gabriel Saldana
According to TheCalifornian.com, Gabriel Saldana, owner of the Salinas trucking company GS Transport, has been arrested on five million dollars bail after he threatened to kill several people.
Reports state that after punching his wife in the head, Saldana restricted her by the neck and put a gun to her temple, forcing her to write a letter to the man Saldana believed her to be having an affair with, the site notes.
Saldana planned for his wife to tell her “lover” to meet her at a precise location, in which he would then kill him as well as himself.
In the ruckus, one of their daughters entered the house, where Saldana endangered all of their lives if anyone was made aware of what was happening; however, the daughter managed to alert her sister via text to call 911, the article further explains.
Police discovered a handgun in the garage and arrested Saldana on charges of suspicion of exhibiting a firearm, false imprisonment, domestic violence, and terrorist threats (http://www.thecalifornian.com/article/20101018/NEWS09/101018021).
Case in point, would you rather have a safe carrier who is involved with family and the community like Road Scholar Transport is or a company whose owner you need to fear?

With the economy’s high prices, people are turning to quick and easy ways to save money. But will the deal they got cost them more in the end?
That seems to be the case with trucking companies, who are turning to online sites such as Craigslist and E-bay to buy cheaper equipment.
According to KXXV-TV, companies are landing great deals on trailers only to find that instead of purchasing an affordable trailer, they were also buying a stolen one, one of the reasons why they couldn’t get a title.
You will never see one of Road Scholar Transport’s trailers listed on Craigslist. With our extensive security features and brightly colored awareness trailers, thieves would have a hard time stealing our trucks and with aerial and ground tracking devices, have a harder time getting away.
We buy our tractor trailers from credible, well-known companies because when it comes to purchasing another tractor trailer, safety overrides cost.
E-bay is a popular buy and bid auction site with $2,000 worth the goods being bought per second on the site last year (http://www.ebayinc.com/who).
Craigslist is an online classifieds site which gathers 20 billion views each month (http://www.craigslist.org/about/factsheet). Craigslist has been given a dangerous reputation, however, with news reports of killings, illegal postings, etc.

You may have seen Lasher Brother Trucking Company Inc. in the news recently and it’s not for their quality service.
According to Merced Sun-Star, brothers Kulwant and Tarlochan Lasher, co-owners of the Los Banos, CA company, pleaded guilty yesterday to bribing an IRS officer in an attempt to “eliminate the company’s $2.4 million tax liability.”
So how much of a bribe are we talking about? Try $600,000 worth. This amount was not given in tens and twenties either. Rather, Kulwant Lasher received $56,500 in cash as well as the officer’s “2003 BMW 745L and a quitclaim deed for his home in Los Banos,” in which $95,000 of that bribe Kulwant used to buy a new 745 BMW (http://www.mercedsunstar.com/2010/10/05/1597457/trucking-company-co-owners-plead.html).
As the site notes, this case is currently the largest thus far of one involving bribery of an IRS official and come Dec. 13, Kulwant can receive a maximum of fifteen years in prison in addition to a $250,000 fine while his brother Tarlochan can be sentenced to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
Want quality service? Then look no further than Road Scholar Transport. Visit our site at www.roadscholar.com and be sure to check out our new Awareness Program site at www.roadscholarawareness.org.

First, they began to lose their customers…then, their employees. Now, North Bergen distributor Interstate Logistics Inc. plans on shutting down completely.
The company, which has been in business for 32 years, could not compete with the trucking industry’s rising costs and competition from strong companies like Road Scholar Transport.
To make matters worse, International Logistics’ sole customer, JC Penney which has been with them since 2002, did not renew their contract, believing it “more efficient to ship directly from suppliers to our other facilities” (http://www.northjersey.com/news/business/104257489_Feisty_distributor__closing_by_Dec__31.html?c=y&page=1).
The 65 employees still remaining will begin being laid off come November 11, according to NorthJersey.com.
Interstate Logistics Inc. decided to close its doors at the end of the year when JC Penney’s contract is officially up on Dec. 31, turning the engines off of 16 trucks and 80 trailers.
WOW, compare that to a company like Road Scholar Transport who has about 100 tractors and 280 trailers! Luckily, Road Scholar Transport is running full speed with no signs whatsoever of slowing down.

As the trucking industry struggles to deal with capacity issues, Daimler Trucks presents the notion that by 2015, the world will see a 50 percent increase in the truck market, according to an article on truckinginfo.com.
The news came the day before this year’s Hannover truck show, which took place in Germany. According to Daimler Trucks, the BRIC nations (Brazil, Russia, India and China) as well as “Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, South Korea, Turkey and Vietnam,” otherwise known as the Next 11, are predicted to have the largest increase in this market (http://www.truckinginfo.com/news/news-detail.asp?news_id=71710). How big of an increase are we talking about? Take it this way, Indonesia’s market alone is estimated to increase by 87 percent during this year, the site claims.
According to Bloomberg Businessweek, trucking companies ceased buying trucks due to the recession, but economic recovery will lead to more sales, projected at three million by the year 2015.
Daimler is the largest truckmaker in Europe and plans on expanding their factories to growing markets (http://news.businessweek.com/article.asp?documentKey=1376-L91UAB0YHQ0X01-54PJ8ME6CI3VVKD9881NNVANI5).

Kovac Express driver David Dennett returned to the Michigan City area truck stop two days later, only to find that his semi-trailer was gone.
According to The Herald Argus, Dennett was hauling over 8 tons of playground equipment to a retailer in New Jersey, when he parked it at Gas City before heading home. The trailer was still there the next day when he passed by but when he returned Sunday night, all that was left was the GPS from the truck, which thieves were smart enough to remove before taking off with the semi-truck and its cargo (http://heraldargus.com/articles/2010/09/09/news/local/doc4c88544737c84912524722.txt). With no GPS, it will make it harder for the semi-trailer to be tracked down.
This is not the first trailer to be stolen from the truck stop. As the site notes, two years ago a trailer carrying 20 tons of chocolate was stolen as well and later recovered.
It’s a good thing that Road Scholar Transport covers all bases when it comes to security. Not only do we have covert, assisted GPS cargo tracking, but roof tracking decals (making our trucks readily recognizable and harder to steal), cargo cam, Qualcomm (featuring panic buttons to prevent operation of vehicles), Skybitz monitoring and tracking (including monitoring of any door openings and closures), reefer and power unit tracking, and locks and seals to protect your cargo and our trucks.
Why let a trailer sit overnight? Road Scholar Transport provides 24 hour expedited shipping (dock to dock with NO transfers) and 48 hour expedited west coast service.
And with our brightly colored awareness tractor trailers, you can guaranteed that Road Scholar’s trucks with not be easily stolen.
Want to ship with a safe company? Then visit www.roadscholar.com.
