Jim and Debra Barrett on Northeast Pennsylvania Business Journal

Friday, February 8th, 2013

On January 23rd, Jim and Debra Barrett (founders of Road Scholar Transport) had the honor of appearing on Season 5 of Northeast Pennsylvania Business Journal, a WVIA program that seeks out “remarkable business men and women here in Northeast and North Central Pennsylvania,” that have “stories of hard work, sacrifice and success…who started or built successful companies that improve our communities, employ our neighbors and are living examples for future generations.” 1

According to its host, Bill Kelly, the NEPA Business Journal “Seeks out people who have great stories” and Jim and Debra have just that.

“You are a bootstrap operations.  Started with nothing.  Had to put up your home to do it,” Kelly explains.

first truck

Work ethic is nothing shy of the Barretts.  Jim had started driving trucks at age 14 and was the sole driver of a leased 30-year-old truck when the company began in 1988 as Debra dispatched, did accounting, etc. from the Barrett’s home.

Since then, the company has grown to include operations in six terminals with the same principle in mind, “If we give our word, it’s going to get done.  This company has never been cited for a piece of defective equipment involved in an accident.  We have an impeccable record,” says Jim.

Besides the services and strong emphasis on security that Road Scholar Transport provides, the company also stands out in its awareness campaign, whose goal is to “Bring help and awareness to people less fortunate,” growing to accommodate over two dozen different awareness trucks with about 30 trucks being part of this campaign.

“You not only own and run a trucking company,” Kelly explains, “you not only care about your customers enormously, you not only make sure that the promise you make that the freight will perform, that it will deliver the way that you want it to, but you create this idea between the two of you [the awareness campaign].  You know the causes, you know what’s behind them, the bottom story of it all.”

Cancer Risk Found in Majority of Baby Products

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

car seatFrom highchairs to car seats to strollers and even nursing pillows, researchers found that 80% of baby products contain flame retardants that can lead to serious health problems including cancer.

With no standard from their own states, most manufacturers producing baby products abide by the 1975 California safety rule that “requires polyurethane foam in upholstered furniture to be able to withstand an open flame for 12 seconds without catching fire,” an article in The NY Times notes, and with flame retardants being the most cost efficient way to go, it is not wonder that most products contain them.

At the same time, the rule restricts exposure to substances that are considered dangerous to children, the article explains.

So poses the question, do children actually absorb the flame retardants making up these products?

That answer has yet to be determined but looking at the fact that “toddlers have levels of flame retardants in their bodies three times higher than adults,” mainly due to the fact that children put their fingers in their mouth, it would not come as a surprise if the answer is yes (http://yourlife.usatoday.com/parenting-family/babies/story/2011/05/Toxic-flame-retardants-found-in-80-of-baby-products/47268922/1).

According to The NY Times, a recent study found the chemical chlorinated tris, a carcinogen, to be in 1/3 of products tested, as well as TCEP, another carcinogen, in several nursing pillows.

All together, researchers distinguished a minimum of “eight different flame-retarding chemicals” in various baby accessories (http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=chemical-flame-retardants-lace-baby-products).

But there is a bright side to all of this.  The majority of products in the study were manufactured in 2002 or earlier.  Since then, many manufacturers chose to eliminate flame retardants from their products.  This includes companies such as Boppy and Baby Bjorn.

And with California’s safety rule changing to eliminate certain baby items from their list of products that need to coincide with fire safety standards, researchers believe that a lower risk would be found when testing today’s baby products.

Do Cell Phones Really Lead to Brain Cancer? Researchers Have the Answer

Monday, February 21st, 2011

Over the past years, cell phone usage has grown.  We cannot step into cell phoneanother room without our phone tied to our hip.  Texting, internet usage, and continual developing features make it harder to go anywhere without your “best friend” at your side.  But is the claim that cell phone usage could lead to brain cancer something to worry about?

In short, no.

According to a recent study conducted by researchers from the University of Manchester, cell phone usage contributes very little to a person’s risk of developing brain cancer to the point that it’s not very significant at all.

Scientists determined that if cell phones played a large role in brain cancer, then data should report findings that demonstrate that when cell phone usage increased, brain cancer diagnoses did as well.

Analyzing data from the years 1998 through 2007 in England, when the number of people using cell phones was on the brink, scientists found no significant change in diagnoses, medicalnewstoday.com notes.

In fact, out of 52 million people living in England, only 31 extra cases were found during this time when cell phone usage rose a whopping 65% (http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/216910.php).

In conclusion, researchers found no need for a public health release on cell phones.

So once again, cell phone remains man’s new best friend and Road Scholar Transport has the expertise and equipment to keep your friend safe during transport.  With real-time satellite tracking and electronic door monitoring, among other security measures, you can be assured that your freight is safe from damage or being stolen.  And the best part is, we are raising awareness while doing so with our brightly colored awareness trucks, featuring charities such as Alex’s Lemonade, The Children’s Tumor Foundation, and Prostate Cancer Awareness.

Road Scholar Transport Rolls Out New Awareness Trailer

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

Once again, Road Scholar Transport has expanded its Awareness Campaign efforts by introducing its newest addition…the Rock on Judi H trailer benefitting the Northeast Regional Cancer Institute.judi h

The new trailer was created in memory of Judi H, musician Paul LaBelle’s niece who passed away from breast cancer in 2007 at the age of 45.  LaBelle started the Rock On Judi H campaign, selling $20 raffle tickets featuring a chance to win a one-of-a-kind Pink Lady Guitar, created and autographed by renowned guitar maker Paul Reed Smith.  All proceeds from the sales were donated to the Northeast Regional Cancer Institute in Judi’s memory.

Road Scholar Transport jumped in to get involved, helping to sell tickets as well as creating an awareness trailer to continue to spread breast cancer awareness nationwide.  The trailer features Judi’s picture along with the Pink Lady Guitar.

Brain Tumor Risk Greatly Decreased Thanks to Allergies

Wednesday, February 9th, 2011

Allergies may be a pain to millions of people but before you start complaining, you may want to be thankful you have them.

A recent study confirmed a link between allergies and a person’s risk of having glioma, a type of brain tumor.

Researchers at the University of Illinois conducted a survey on “419 patients with glioma and 612 cancer-free patients from Duke University and North Shore University Health System,” finding that the more allergies a person had, the more prone they were to developing a brain tumor (http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/216010.php).

The use of an antihistamine, taken to relieve allergy symptoms, had no effect on a person’s risk of glioma, giving people relief in knowing that they have allergies and can take an easy form of treatment for it rather than not having any allergies at all and risk having a brain tumor.

So the next time you complain about the pollen in the air or cat on your lap, be thankful that you are allergic.

Cancer Spreads in Disadvantaged Countries as Road Scholar Transport Continues to Spread Awareness

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

Cancer is on the rise in disadvantaged countries and something needs to be done to prevent it…and fast.

According to www.medicalnewstoday.com, nearly 75% of cancer patients in underprivileged countries result in fatalities, an estimated 29% more than those in established countries.

So what is being done about this surge?  As the above site notes, experts in the health industry are encouraging the use of off-patent medications, as well as informing citizens and educating physicians about the disease.

Medical News Today notes that 56% of cancer cases in the world during 2008 were found in poorer countries.  If this rate continues, this percentage may rise to 70% by the year 2030.

These are striking facts.  So what can we do to help?  Spread awareness and Road Scholar Transport is doing just that with our 10 Million Miles to a Cure Awareness CampaignRoad Scholar has vowed to travel 10 million miles in order to help spread awareness of the many diseases battling lives today.

How does it work?  Simple, through Road Scholar’s moving billboards.  Road Scholar has trailers dedicated to causes such as, but not limited to:  Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, American Breast Cancer Foundation, Children’s Tumor Foundation, Prostate Cancer Awareness, and the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.

Can you help?  Of course.  Our customers play a large role in this campaign.  We need your business to help keep the spreading awareness.  Visit www.roadscholar.com/awareness to learn more about our campaign and to view our awareness trailers.
