No Tracking Device Offers Little Hope in Recovering $1.7 Million Electronic Shipment

Monday, December 19th, 2011

BlackBerry PlayBook tablets Electronics have always been a high-risk target among thieves, especially around the holidays, ranking in as the number one stolen commodity between February 2010 and January 2011 (21% of all stolen goods) according to FreightWatch.  Knowing this, it would come as no surprise that shippers are taking extra precaution when it comes to transporting their cargo, choosing carriers such as Road Scholar Transport, who provides high security features that ensure the safety of your freight.

Then again, maybe you are a gambler and would rather play with price than safety.  Would you be willing to put your $1.7 million high-risk shipment on a truck with no tracking devices?

That’s what happened last Thursday for a load of electronics destined for Ontario, Canada.

The truck, carrying 22 pallets filled with 5,000 of RIM (Research in Motion)’s BlackBerry PlayBook tablets valued at $1.7 million, was traveling from a distribution center in Plainfield, IN when its driver decided to stop at the Pilot Travel Center in Daleville for food and a shower, only to find the truck missing that afternoon when he returned.

According to The Herald Bulletin, the distribution center told police that “the shipment did not have any tracking devices,” and therefore, the chances that the truck and its cargo would be recovered are considered slim.

Although no suspects have been named, the police are looking at up to five people involved with potential fingerprints of one of them, believing that the load may be headed for Miami (http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/2133759/usd17m-worth-playbooks-stolen-truck).

RIM’s name has been in the news lately with questions referring to its Blackberry as a “setback” and a “need to ditch the Blackberry for survival.”  Just last week the company announced its financial burden, selling only 150,000 Blackberry Playbook tablets in the third quarter, and therefore, delaying “the launch of smartphones running its Blackberry 10 operating system amid disappointing financial results,” from the beginning of 2012 to a later date, according to The Inquirer.

Now the company has to deal with a $1.7 million loss.  With Road Scholar Transport, however, the shipper can track and receive live status updates and precise locations on their shipments via computer or mobile phone with our ShowMe tracking feature.

Road Scholar’s tractors are also equipped with Qualcomm which provides:

-Panic buttons with vehicle disabling systems to remotely prevent the operation of a vehicle

-Full fleet visibility via computer as well as two 50-inch screens constantly monitored in headquarters

-Digital communication to and from drivers

-The ability to track the movement of a power unit from startup to shutdown as well as its history

-Ability to “ping” a specific power unit for details on its location, which can be updated as frequently as every minute

awareness trucks

If that’s not enough, Road Scholar has roof tracking decals on their trailers and with our colorful awareness trucks, it becomes very easy to pinpoint one of our trucks, and more importantly, harder to steal without going unnoticed.

All of our trailers also contain break locks in which once a key is dislodged, the trailer cannot be moved since the air brakes are locked up, protecting the trailer from being stolen.

With electronic door monitoring alerting of every door opening/closing, our team will be constantly on guard of any irregular activity.  Not to mention Navalock capability which is bolt cutter, sledgehammer, and chisel proof to prevent the tampering of your freight.

Simply put, when your LTL and truckload freight is onboard a Road Scholar truck, you will not have to worry about receiving a call from someone that says, “I’m sorry, but we don’t know where your freight is.”

Turn it Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness, Road Scholar Transport Does 365 Days a Year

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

Breast cancer affects millions of women throughout the world with this month serving as a reminder.

October is breast cancer awareness month and infamous landmarks are taking on a pink appearance reminding people to get checked and educated on the disease.

Palace of Fine Arts

Palace of Fine Arts

Take the USA’s own White House for example, which became a “Pink House” on Oct. 3rd, while the Custom House reflected a ribbon on its pink surface.  Or Mexico City’s Palace of Fine Arts, which kicked off World Day against Breast Cancer on Sept. 29th by lighting itself pink.

Brazil showed its own support of breast cancer awareness by reflecting the color on its 130-foot Rio de Janeiro Christ the Redeemer statue (one of the new 7 wonders of the world) on Oct. 4th for its fourth year in a row.  At the same time, one of the original 7 wonders, the Great Pyramids in Egypt along with the Great Sphinx, changed to a pink color as well.

Odescalchi Castle

Odescalchi Castle

We then travel out of Egypt to Scotland, where Jenners, once Edinburgh’s oldest department store, joined the campaign.  Moving on to Italy, we are struck by the beauty and size of the Odescalchi Castle, which turned pink last May for Susan G. Komen’s Race for the Cure.

But that’s not all of the countries joining the fight.  Hungary took its well-known Chain Bridge in Budapest, a symbol of Hungarian liberty, and turned it pink, while Argentina’s Casa Rosada, otherwise known “Pink House,” lived up to its name by reflecting the color as well.

And for all those football fans out there, Canada’s Niagara Falls turned pink on Oct. 7th thanks to the Buffalo Bills, who did it as part of their Billieve program, with team members in attendance to sign autographs.

Most of these landmarks (which also light it up for autism awareness month each April) do so for one night…but what about the other 364 days of the year?  Breast cancer does not take a break and neither does Road Scholar Transport, which is why Road Scholar’s breast cancer awareness trucks operate 24/7.

Not only does Road Scholar’s awareness trucks keep the hope alive while delivering your freight, but gives cancer survivors, their families, and friends the chance to sign messages of hope at awareness events across the nation.

messages of hope

Messages cover both sides of the 80,000 pound tractor trailer.  When viewing the trailer, you’ll see several memorials noting those who have passed on from breast cancer and words of encouragement for those struggling through it today.  “Anita, you are so strong and you can beat this.  Madeline and Aunt Bert already have,” one of the viewers wrote.

Taking a closer look will be sure to give anyone Goosebumps, as you read some heartwarming messages written by both old and young alike.  Barely able to reach the trailer, a young child, just learning to write, scribbled towards the bottom, “Mommy, can you get well?” finishing with their name written in a heart.

But this is just one type of awareness truck in Road Scholar Transport’s awareness campaignRoad Scholar operates over 20 different awareness units for spreading awareness for organizations including Autism Speaks, Make-a-Wish, The Children’s Cancer Recovery Foundation, and the American Red Cross.

Canada Looking to Follow U.S. Standards after Several Trucking Companies Face Violations

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

Hundreds of Canadian trucking companies are facing violations after being stopped at inspection sites throughout Canada and the United States.

Prince Freight

Take Prince Freight Lines, for an example, which is facing an ‘Alert’ status in the U.S.

Recently, Prince Freight was threatened with closure if it did not improve the violations against them.  According to www.cbc.ca, the trucking company had 14 driver fatigue violations over the last two years (Canadian drivers currently are allowed to drive 13 hours per day as opposed to the U.S. in which it is 11), including three that resulted in injuries due to accidents.

To prevent future violations, Prince Freight hired a safety officer to look after its drivers and make sure that they are abiding by regulations, hoping to earn a ‘Satisfactory’ status in April, the site notes.

And that is not the first trucking company to face a series of violations resulting in an ‘Alert’ status, especially over log book violations, which Canada keeps track of via paper means.  The problem with paper documentation is that these logs can be easily altered.

So what is Canada planning on doing about it?

According to Doug MacEwen, deputy registrar of highway safety, Canada is looking to follow the U.S. and incorporate electronic logbooks into its law (http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/prince-edward-island/story/2011/02/23/pei-trucker-fatigue-prince-freight-584.html).

With the Hours of Service proposal in full bloom, The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is currently pushing for the mandatory use of EOBRs (Electronic Onboard Recording Devices) for those companies prone to violations in order to monitor drivers’ hours.

Check out Road Scholar’s DOT Motor Carrier Safety Certificate at http://www.roadscholar.com/.  With a 0.0005% damage and loss rate, which is among the lowest in the industry and far below the rates of those major national carriers, your cargo is sure to be traveling with a safe carrier.

U.S./Canada Work Together on Border Security/Integrated System

Monday, February 7th, 2011

Obama/HarperOn Friday, President Obama and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced a pact which called for progression towards a more integrated security border system.

Did you know that “at last once every three seconds a truck crosses the Canada-U.S. border?” (http://www.truckinginfo.com/news/news-detail.asp?news_id=72904).  By working more closely together, the countries hope to improve security measures with compatible screening methods on who and what enters and leaves the countries in order to eliminate threats, without slowing down the border process.

According to www.freep.com, President Obama and Prime Minister Harper acknowledged moving towards “an integrated United States-Canada entry-exit system so each knew who was coming and going across its border” as well as improving shared intelligence.

The site notes that the two leaders are determined to “improve trade and create jobs,” while making “it easier and less expensive…to do business” together, especially in the auto industry.

Speaking of the auto industry, Road Scholar Transport provides auto hauling service with competitive rates, enclosed car carriers, air-ride equipment, and top-of-the-line security measures to ensure that your auto is safe during transport.  Visit www.roadscholar.com to learn more.

Although Canada and the U.S. established the pact, the exact date on when it will go into effect has not yet been determined but further reporting is expected in the upcoming months.
