Is Your Drinking Water Causing Cancer?

Monday, December 20th, 2010

According to Medical News Today, The Environmental Group tested the tap water in 35 cities, finding that 31 of them contained samples of carcinogenic hexavalent chromium, known to cause gastrointestinal tumors.

Scientists found that the 0.06 ppb (parts per billion) public health goal in California was surpassed in 25 of the cities, the average ppb being 0.18 (http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/212079.php).

The following results were provided by medicalnewstoday.com:

-Norman, Oklahoma, population – 89,952
Hexavalent chromium level 12.9 ppb

-Honolulu, Hawaii: population – 661,004
Hexavalent chromium level 2.00 ppb

-Riverside, California, population – 280,832
Hexavalent chromium level 1.69 ppb

-Madison, Wisconsin, population – 200,814
Hexavalent chromium level 1.58 ppb

-San Jose, California, population – 979,000
Hexavalent chromium level 1.34 ppb

At least 74 million Americans are at a regular risk with their tap water being contaminated and the EPA is being encouraged to mandate the regular testing of tap water for all water utility companies, the site notes.

Text a Wish This Christmas

Monday, December 6th, 2010

You sign up for daily horoscope texts, text your vote for your favorite singer on American Idol, and enter text contests all the time.

Let’s face it, many of us would be lost without the internet on our phone, the ability to text, or to be able to snap a picture at a moment’s notice.  So why not put your phone to use this holiday season?

The Greater Pennsylvania and Southern West Virginia Make-A-Wish Foundation chapters have launched a text campaign, the first for their foundation.

The campaign is determined to gain new supporters by giving them a different/more convenient way to donate.

It only takes a couple of seconds, just text WISH to 90999.  You can donate five times per phone, contributing $5 per text, deducted from your phone bill or prepaid account.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants children (2 ½-18 years old) with life-threatening conditions their wish, whether it is a trip to Disney World, meeting their favorite celebrity, or even just a toy they want.

Visit http://www.roadscholarawareness.org/our-charities/make-a-wish-foundation/ to learn more about the Make-A-Wish Foundation and to view Road Scholar Transport’s Make-A-Wish awareness trailer.

“Movember” Event in Full Swing

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

Every October, you see people wearing pink ribbons to show their support for those affected with breast cancer and to serve as a reminder to get checked.

This month marks prostate cancer awareness month, and to raise money, men are trading in their razors for a mustache.

Every year hundreds of thousands of men take part in the “Movember” event.  Beginning November 1st, men embark on the 30 day campaign to raise money for prostate cancer research.  Think of it as wearing a ribbon on your face.

Those who register on the campaign’s website (http://us.movember.com/) can win prizes based on how much money they raise.  Winners will be announced on December 9th.

According to www.wcsh6.com, the event hopes to raise $65 million, which will then be donated to the Prostate Cancer Foundation as well as Livestrong.org.

Individuals can donate on the Movember’s site as well.

Road Scholar Transport does not take part in the event for just one month, rather sponsors Prostate Cancer Awareness 24/7, 365 days a year with our Prostate Cancer Awareness trailer.

TCA Opposes ATA on Safe and Efficient Transportation Act

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

According to truckinginfo.com, the Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) is not only against the American Trucking Associations’ (ATA) push for a 97,000 pound weight limit on six-axles, but is proposing their own plan as well.

The Safe and Efficient Transportation Act believes that an increased weight limit and size on trailers would provide more space so that carriers could make fewer trips, and therefore, save on fuel emissions and mileage (http://www.truckinginfo.com/news/news-detail.asp?news_id=71654).

But would trucking companies really benefit from this?  Many so no, arguing that the ability to carry more freight at the same rates would result in a financial loss.  The TCA states that companies would be at the expense of buying new equipment that they would not be able to pay for in the end, the site notes.

So what does the TCA have in mind?  They are putting forth a weight proposal of 87-88,000 pounds on five axels which they believe would not harm industries financial-wise.

To view more of the TCA’s initiative, visit their website at http://www.truckload.org/.

Road Scholar Transport is taking an initiative as well, against the many conditions battling lives today.  That’s why we created the 10 Million Miles to a Cure Awareness Campaign, which started with one pink breast cancer awareness truck and has grown to include organizations such as Alex’s Lemonade, Autism Speaks, Children’s Tumor Foundation, Prostate Cancer Awareness, International Rett Syndrome Foundation, St. Joseph’s Center, American Foundation for the Blind, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PANCAN), The Flight 93 National Memorial, and The American Red Cross.

Check out our Red Cross Trailer at the Glenmaura Golf Course (100 Glenmaura National Boulevard Moosic, PA 18507) at 8:00 am on Monday, Sept. 20th!

Why choose Road Scholar Transport?

Monday, September 13th, 2010

EXPERTISE: Road Scholar Transport has been in business since 1988, when owner Jim Barrett leased a tractor trailer, and with his wife Debra taking on the role of dispatcher, laid the groundwork for what grew to be an industry of approximately 95 drivers and tractors, over 350 trailers, and ten owner operators…and it all started with one leased tractor trailer and a dream.

SERVICES: Need it there fast?  No problem.  Road Scholar Transport offers 24 hour expedited shipping (dock-to-dock with NO transfers) and 48 hour west coast service.  With 48 and 53 foot trailer availability, and van, reefer, freezer, and heater options, be assured that whatever your freight is, Road Scholar can transport it.  Key service areas include the Mid-Atlantic and New England areas (Eastern VA to ME) but we not limited to those areas by any means.  Our trucks are often seen throughout the nation!

All of our trailers are air ride and reefers contain a remote temperature setting via a secure website, so you can rest tight that your cargo is safe.  That, and the fact that Road Scholar Transport has a 0.0001% damage rate and never suffered a full cargo loss.  Our drivers are HazMat certified and underwent emergency response procedure training to know what to do if anything should ever happen.

With our online tools, you can get a quote from customer service within 10 minutes, schedule a pickup, track a shipment, online document retrieval, fuel surcharges, pre-populate your shipping locations, print a BOL, get an auto rate quote, and much more.  How much easier can it get?

SECURITY FEATURES: Don’t wait for something to happen to your freight before you look into which trucking industries have the best security.  It takes perpetrators less than 90 seconds to defeat a truck’s security features and steal your freight.  Any longer than that, they move on to another target.  With Road Scholar, thieves would be running away from our security features.

Our tractor trailers feature SkyBitz (mapping the most recent, and historical, positions of all vehicles, e-mail and/or pager alerts sent out in the event of a status change, and reports/alerts of door openings and closures).  With cargo cam, covert, assisted GPS cargo tracking, bolt and cable seals, tamper evident tapes and seals, truck, trailer, and container locks and seals, your cargo is safe from thieves.

Road Scholar Transport also has Qualcomm distress/panic messaging, which features panic buttons to prevent operation of a vehicle, roof decals for aerial tracking, and facility security.

HELPING OTHERS: Road Scholar Transport has a social conscious as well.  If you haven’t heard by now, our company created the 10 Million Miles to a Cure Awareness Campaign.  We have many trailers dedicated to different charities/organizations such as, but not limited to:  Alex’s Lemonade, Autism Speaks, American Breast Cancer Foundation, Children’s Tumor Foundation, Prostate Cancer Awareness, International Rett Syndrome Foundation, St. Joseph’s Center, American Foundation for the Blind, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PANCAN), The Flight 93 National Memorial, and The American Red Cross.  Through the use of these rolling billboards, we will travel 10 million miles in order to help spread awareness and hopefully save the lives of thousands.  Visit www.roadscholar.com/awareness to learn more about our campaign and to view our awareness trucks.
