Jim and Debra Barrett on Northeast Pennsylvania Business Journal

Friday, February 8th, 2013

On January 23rd, Jim and Debra Barrett (founders of Road Scholar Transport) had the honor of appearing on Season 5 of Northeast Pennsylvania Business Journal, a WVIA program that seeks out “remarkable business men and women here in Northeast and North Central Pennsylvania,” that have “stories of hard work, sacrifice and success…who started or built successful companies that improve our communities, employ our neighbors and are living examples for future generations.” 1

According to its host, Bill Kelly, the NEPA Business Journal “Seeks out people who have great stories” and Jim and Debra have just that.

“You are a bootstrap operations.  Started with nothing.  Had to put up your home to do it,” Kelly explains.

first truck

Work ethic is nothing shy of the Barretts.  Jim had started driving trucks at age 14 and was the sole driver of a leased 30-year-old truck when the company began in 1988 as Debra dispatched, did accounting, etc. from the Barrett’s home.

Since then, the company has grown to include operations in six terminals with the same principle in mind, “If we give our word, it’s going to get done.  This company has never been cited for a piece of defective equipment involved in an accident.  We have an impeccable record,” says Jim.

Besides the services and strong emphasis on security that Road Scholar Transport provides, the company also stands out in its awareness campaign, whose goal is to “Bring help and awareness to people less fortunate,” growing to accommodate over two dozen different awareness trucks with about 30 trucks being part of this campaign.

“You not only own and run a trucking company,” Kelly explains, “you not only care about your customers enormously, you not only make sure that the promise you make that the freight will perform, that it will deliver the way that you want it to, but you create this idea between the two of you [the awareness campaign].  You know the causes, you know what’s behind them, the bottom story of it all.”

By clicking on NEPA Business Journal’s interview with Jim and Debra below, you will learn:

Do Cell Phones Really Lead to Brain Cancer? Researchers Have the Answer

Monday, February 21st, 2011

Over the past years, cell phone usage has grown.  We cannot step into cell phoneanother room without our phone tied to our hip.  Texting, internet usage, and continual developing features make it harder to go anywhere without your “best friend” at your side.  But is the claim that cell phone usage could lead to brain cancer something to worry about?

In short, no.

According to a recent study conducted by researchers from the University of Manchester, cell phone usage contributes very little to a person’s risk of developing brain cancer to the point that it’s not very significant at all.

Scientists determined that if cell phones played a large role in brain cancer, then data should report findings that demonstrate that when cell phone usage increased, brain cancer diagnoses did as well.

Analyzing data from the years 1998 through 2007 in England, when the number of people using cell phones was on the brink, scientists found no significant change in diagnoses, medicalnewstoday.com notes.

In fact, out of 52 million people living in England, only 31 extra cases were found during this time when cell phone usage rose a whopping 65% (http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/216910.php).

In conclusion, researchers found no need for a public health release on cell phones.

So once again, cell phone remains man’s new best friend and Road Scholar Transport has the expertise and equipment to keep your friend safe during transport.  With real-time satellite tracking and electronic door monitoring, among other security measures, you can be assured that your freight is safe from damage or being stolen.  And the best part is, we are raising awareness while doing so with our brightly colored awareness trucks, featuring charities such as Alex’s Lemonade, The Children’s Tumor Foundation, and Prostate Cancer Awareness.

The new trailer was created in memory of Judi H, musician Paul LaBelle’s niece who passed away from breast cancer in 2007 at the age of 45.  LaBelle started the Rock On Judi H campaign, selling $20 raffle tickets featuring a chance to win a one-of-a-kind Pink Lady Guitar, created and autographed by renowned guitar maker Paul Reed Smith.  All proceeds from the sales were donated to the Northeast Regional Cancer Institute in Judi’s memory.

Road Scholar Transport jumped in to get involved, helping to sell tickets as well as creating an awareness trailer to continue to spread breast cancer awareness nationwide.  The trailer features Judi’s picture along with the Pink Lady Guitar.

Study Finds Majority of Cancer Cells to be Destroyed by Eating this Fruit

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

A recent study conducted at Clemson University found raspberries to be more effective than antioxidants in killing raspberriescancer.

According to naturalnews.com, researchers compared the extract from the popular brand Meeker red raspberries to a vitamin C solution, finding that although the vitamin C solution contained a greater number of antioxidants, raspberries were “eight times more effective” in destroying cancer cells.

Why is this?  Because raspberries contain substances other than antioxidants that are better anti-cancer agents, especially in breast cancer cells where antioxidants are only “half as effective as raspberries,” the site notes.  These substances are yet to be determined.

The study concluded that “raspberry extracts successfully destroyed about 90 percent of stomach, colon, and breast cancer cells” (http://www.naturalnews.com/031272_cancer_raspberries_power.html).

Let’s kill off the other 10% by spreading awareness like Road Scholar is doing with our 10 Million Miles to a Cure Awareness Campaign, spreading awareness for organizations including The American Breast Cancer Foundation, Alex’s Lemonade, and Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.

Cancer Beware! Road Scholar is Transporting the Goods That Can Bring You Down

Friday, January 28th, 2011

From front to back, Road Scholar has the trailers to help fight off cancer.  Let’s start with the outside and work our way in.

Alex's Lemonade

Each of Road Scholar’s awareness trailers are dedicated to a different organization, from Alex’s Lemonade to The Children’s Cancer Recovery Foundation to The American Breast Cancer Foundation and these are just three of the many cancer organizations Road Scholar is spreading awareness for with its 10 Million Miles to a Cure Awareness Campaign.  View all of Road Scholar’s awareness trailers at www.roadscholarawareness.org.

Now we travel inside one of Road Scholar’s reefers, which is safely transporting one of the best cancer prevention goods across the nation.  No, not pharmaceuticals (though Road Scholar does securely transport them as well).  This reefer is full of vegetables, in particular broccoli.

Yes broccoli, which a recent study has found to be very effective in fighting off cancer when cooked properly.

According to http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com, eating steamed broccoli at 3-5 servings a week is very powerful in destroying cancer.  But it has to be steamed.

Overcooking broccoli destroys the enzyme myrosinase, which is responsible for forming sulforaphane, “broccoli’s cancer-preventive and anti-inflammatory component,” the site notes.

Not only is Road Scholar transporting broccoli, but broccoli sprouts, radishes, mustard, arugula, and wasabi, all, when combined with broccoli, greatly boost preventative measures against cancer

So cancer beware:  broccoli and Road Scholar Transport are taken you down.

Join the fight at www.roadscholar.com.
