Tuesday, February 28th, 2012Caught on Tape: Thieves Make Away with Company’s Sole Truck to Steal Another’s Trailer
Friday, June 10th, 2011Not one, but two North Carolina companies were the victims of a theft last month when thieves took a tractor from a privately-owned company, using it to then steal a trailer from a trucking company.
A & B Land & Timber, located in Fuquay-Varina, had their sole truck cab stolen on May 11th, resulting in the company having to hire contract haulers to transport their shipments, an article on wral.com notes.
But that’s not all. The thieves then waited an hour before driving the truck to Williams Brothers Trucking in New Hill, stealing one of the company’s $40,000 trailers.
Surveillance video caught the theft, which occurred in under four minutes, as it plowed it’s way through the company’s fence, which was actually wide open at the other end, the article notes. (See video on the right)
So what happens next? According to one GOLO member on the site, who goes by the name ‘djofraleigh,’ “Someone went into trucking business.”
Unfortunately, this is the case a lot of the time, where thieves create fraudulent trucking companies to steal freight…your freight. This is another reason to conduct research on a carrier before trusting them with your precious cargo. Better yet, why not get a first-person customer point of view on the reputation of a company before shipping with them. At www.roadscholar.com, you will be granted access to both freight and auto hauling customer testimonials telling you about their experiences with Road Scholar. Don’t take our word for it, take shippers’ and receivers’ like yourself.
Another person, going by the codename “radartoe,” also commented on the theft stating, “They’ll never find it. Had one stolen and I don’t even think they ever looked for it. If they did stop someone they look at the truck ID, but never ever the trailer.”
That’s why Road Scholar Transport not only has tracking devices on all of our tractors, but trailers as well, knowing the precise location of your freight, and our equipment, at all times.
Unable to track down their missing trailer a month later, Williams Brothers Trucking is now offering a $5,000 reward for the recovery of their trailer.
According to the company, the truck is “a white 1990 freight-liner with “A&B” on the doors” and “North Carolina tag number YA104853,” while the trailer has “‘Williams Brothers Trucking’ decals and Georgia tag number LE5256F” (http://www.wral.com/news/local/story/9703676/). Those with any information are asked to contact Roger Williams at 912-424-4777.
Stories from the Road…Butch Bailey
Tuesday, May 10th, 2011Any Road Scholar employee who hears the pitter patter of small paws in the office knows immediately that it’s Skip, a Jack Russell Terrier belonging to driver Butch Bailey.
Butch has been driving for Road Scholar Transport for over 8 years now and those that meet him for the first time often ask, “You’re the one with the dog right?” Butch laughs, knowing that Skip surely makes his rounds when visiting the terminal.
And it’s not just at Road Scholar that Skip has become well-known.
“He’s been around some real famous people. Alan Jackson…David Letterman…Jay Leno. We hauled a car for them.” Butch is referring to Road Scholar’s auto hauling service.
“We get to meet a lot of people, me and Skip, when we are doing cars. He’s my buddy. He stays with me all the time. Ever since he was about 8 weeks old.”
Skip will be 10-years-old on June 23rd but has been by Butch’s side on every road trip over the years.
In the middle of the interview, we were interrupted by Skip, who came darting in for a quick pet and then ran back out to make his rounds.
“He has an attention span of about two minutes,” Butch joked.
“So why is Skip so special?” I asked and he began to tell me Skip’s story.
“I saw Skip before he was even born.” It turns out that the owner’s husband was a vet and Butch was able to see Skip via an ultrasound before he was born.
“Skip was a family of six but he and his sister were the only ones that made it. I wasn’t even supposed to get him. A little girl was supposed to. She had leukemia but then the family decided not to get her a dog. The little girl called me and asked if I wanted Skip. Me and Skip were destined…destined.”
Butch then began to talk about Road Scholar and how accepting they were of Skip, mentioning one time in particular back in 2009 when he had to stay in the hospital for awhile and Road Scholar employees jumped in, taking turns caring for Skip.
That is prime example of the warm hospitality Road Scholar has towards its employees and customers.
So the next time you see a Road Scholar truck on the road or backed into your dock, keep a lookout for Skip and be sure to wish Butch a Happy Birthday on May 16th!
Shippers Warned to be on Guard and Practice Secure Measures as Recent Pharmaceutical Thefts Point to Growing Concern Over Fraudulent Trucking Companies
Monday, May 2nd, 2011Have you heard of Medy Trucking? According to Quic
Indianapolis, IN and operates only one truck and driver. But then again, they recently went into business on March 3, 2011 so their small operation is still growing right? Not anymore.
According to securingpharma.com, Medy Trucking was another case of a fictitious trucking company registering with the US Department of Transportation in order to steal freight.
Concerns over fraudulent trucking companies are continuing to rise as the Easter weekend alone experienced eight thefts for this very reason.
According to The Pharmaceutical Cargo Security Consortium, thieves are obtaining driver identification credentials and using them to register as a legit transportation company, as “Medy Trucking” did, the site notes.
High risk targets include food and pharmaceuticals which, under the wrong hands, can cause serious effects to consumers if the products are tampered with and then sold, not to mention the costs of a lost shipment. Two out of the eight shipments that were stolen over the Easter weekend were pharmaceutical, with a grand total of all eight shipments accumulating an estimated loss of over $1.2 million (http://www.securingpharma.com/40/articles/925.php).
But just because a manufacturer/distributer does not ship a product considered “low risk” does not mean that they should not be concerned about the security of their cargo, experts explain, especially when it comes to shipping via 3rd parties in which you do not know who is handling your freight.
As the article in securingpharma.com notes, “This rash of thefts is largely made possible through online brokering sites that criminal elements use to impersonate legitimate carriers, and win business from shippers…Of course the loads never arrive at the destination and are never seen again.”
So how do you ensure that you’re putting your freight in the hands of a trusted carrier? Easy, just follow these steps:

Achates Power to Release More Efficient Engine
Friday, March 4th, 2011With fuel prices skyrocketing, consumers are looking for any little way to cut back on fuel prices.
Recently, we told you about BMI Corp’s device that attaches to the undercarriage and rear top of the trailer that would cut fuel usage, and now, we are giving you yet another product that might help.

Achates Power, founded in 2004, proposed the creation of a new engine that would save on two important matters, both which are intermingled: fuel and cost.
The new prototype will improve fuel mileage on trucks (which currently average 5-6 miles per gallon), which in return lowers the cost of having to purchase fuel.
According to Archates Power’s CEO David Johnson, the new engine will cut fuel usage by 10 to 15%! The best part is, this efficient engine is cheaper to make than the current ones.
As greentechmedia.com notes, Archates Power’s engine “will cost 10 percent to 15 percent less than a conventional engine to manufacture.” Why is this? As the company explains, the engine would be less expensive because it would require fewer components.
Instead of having an engine in which each piston has its own cylinder, the new engine would contain “two cylinders in the same cylinder,” which would “charge toward each other and serve as the de facto cylinder head for the other,” thus removing the need for cylinder heads (http://www.greentechmedia.com/articles/read/an-engine-that-costs-less-and-gets-better-mileage/).
Although this engine may help with the current fuel crisis, consumers will have to wait four to five more years for it to be available for purchase.
Until then, Road Scholar Transport continues to haul your LTL/TL freight and automobiles with the addition of several new trucks that will add to our green initiative (one truck being 42 times cleaner than a 2007 engine)! Visit www.roadscholar.com to learn more.
