Do Your Research Before Trusting Your Freight in the Hands of a Carrier

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

Do you know who is pulling up to your dock to pick up your freight?  Or do you know what company you can expect to deliver it?  Better yet, can you guarantee that your freight will be delivered?

It is important to do your research when choosing what carrier to trust with your freight.  Not doing so is bound to place your freight, as well as company’s reputation, at risk.

king crab

So was the case last Friday with Vitan Enterprises, whose shipment of king crab was stolen “without a trace.”

Nearly 25,000 pounds of king crab was to be delivered on Monday to International Seafoods Venture in Seattle from the L.A. cold-storage warehouse where it originated.

On Monday, the driver phoned in from Oregon to report mechanical difficulties, The Seattle Times explains, and the load, which was valued at over $400,000, never made it to its destination.

According to the article, Vitan Enterprises uses New Sound Transportation, a Washington company that uses truck contractors to fill lanes, for several of its shipments.  The problem with this is that there is not a steady, single carrier transporting the company’s freight but rather various companies.

Wouldn’t you rather know that a distinguishable/recognizable company with uniformed drivers and reliable equipment is going to show up at you and your customer’s dock in a professional manner the way that Road Scholar Transport does?

New Sound Transportation acknowledged that although they post their lanes online for truck contractors, they do not list the contents of the cargo, and therefore, while king crab is currently a high valued target due to current price surges, there is doubt that thieves in this case knew exactly what they were stealing.

New Sound Transportation continued to explain that when they initially examined the truck contractor, “the trucker’s insurance, driver’s license and other documents appeared to be legitimate,” yet when the freight did not deliver, they reinvestigated the material and found it to be a case of fraud, stressing the importance of thoroughly checking a carrier before trusting them with your freight  (http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2015168410_crabtheft28m.html).

According to The Seattle Times, Vitan Enterpises’ Andrew Feoktistov states, “No one knows where it went.  Did it go south, north, east?”  This brings up the issue of cargo security.  If you are a company looking for the cheapest service, then you shouldn’t expect features such as satellite tracking or electronic door monitoring for when something goes wrong.Road Scholar Transport

Road Scholar not only has independent tracking on both the tractor and trailer, quickly uncovering the precise location of your cargo, but navalock and seals preventing the tampering of your products.

Don’t leave it up to the broker to find the right person to transport your precious LTL and truckload freight.  Do your research and choose Road Scholar Transport, an asset-based carrier ensuring quality service and security of your goods.

Have you ever experienced a problem with a broker before?

Pfizer Warns Consumers to be Aware of Purchases After Theft

Friday, May 27th, 2011

PfizerThe world’s largest research-based pharmaceutical company, Pfizer, is warning consumers to be aware of the illegal reselling of its products after being subjected to thieves earlier this month.

In a May 14th shipment originating from their Memphis facility to a CVS location in Rhode Island, an estimated 13,000 units of Pfizer pharmaceuticals were stolen.

Pfizer, in conjunction with law enforcement officials, are still trying to track and recover their products.  In the meantime, they are warning consumers to be on guard for any purchases they deem suspicious and to contact the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Office of Criminal Investigations (1-800-551-3989) with any leads.

Pharmaceuticals are a high-valued target for thieves, who resell the medication for a profit.  Many consumers unwillingly purchase these pharmaceuticals, which may be contaminated due to improper storage conditions and can pose health problems when ingested.

FMCSA Stirs Anger After Setting HOS Publishing Date Without Alerting Public

Friday, May 27th, 2011

The Obama Administration is being attacked once again for failing to inform the trucking industry, as well as the media, of when they would publish the new hours of service (HOS) rule, especially after being questioned several times on a date.  Instead, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) chose to “go behind the public’s back” last Friday and file paperwork, which stated that the rule would be published by October 28th.

Although the FMCSA had an agreement to publish a report on the HOS’s progress FMCSAperiodically, their choice to state an actual date and submit it to the U.S. Court of Appeals stirred anger among those in the industry who were not aware of the new date, an article in The Trucker states.

The FMCSA explained that “it had run the new schedule by the counsel for the plaintiffs, but at least one intervener for the plaintiff is not happy and said he wasn’t informed in advance of the May 20 filing” (http://www.thetrucker.com/News/Stories/2011/5/27/FMCSAcomesupwithnewdateonHOSfinalrule.aspx).

The hours of service proposal, which would reduce a driver’s allowed time from 11 hours a day to 10 hours, has been debated numerous times since its release.

One issue included a suit filed by safety advocates, including Public Citizen, the Truck Safety Coalition, and the Teamsters Union, against the FMCSA’s HOS proposal.  Spokesman for the safety groups, Henry Jasney, however, acknowledged dropping the suit, accepting a decrease in the amount of driving time to 10 hours as well as the 34-hour restart proposal and supported mandatory electronic onboard recorders, believing that they would increase safety.

According to the article, The FMCSA then agreed to “start all over and publish a completely new rule and have it in place by July of this year.”

The July 26th deadline was soon changed when the FMCSA added two new studies last April, reopening a comment period and the need to set a new date, the site furthers.

The American Trucking Associations (ATA) and National Private Truck Council are among several delegates who are continuously showing their opposition of the proposal based on cost of implementation, greater congestion on the road, inaccurate crash statistics, and numbers demonstrating safety improvement by the current HOS rule, among other issues.

Keep updated on new information regarding the hours of service proposal by visiting www.roadscholar.com.

How do you feel about the FMCSA’s decision to publish a new release date without alerting the public of its decision?

NICB Reports 2010 Cargo Theft Statistics and Prevention Methods

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) released its Data Analytics ForeCast Report last week, highlighting last year’s cargo theft statistics which consisted of 747 reports of stolen freight and a loss of over $171,000,000.

The following information is provided by the NICB report found on www.nicb.org/File%20Library/Public%20Affairs/2010-NICB-Identified-Cargo-Thefts.pdf.

Risks:

-Cargo was more prone to theft when stationed at areas where numerous trucks were located, such as “truck stops, parking lots, warehouses, and port cities.”

-Most thefts occur close to their origin, which the report notes, “within 200 miles or four hours.”

-As Walt Beadling and Jim Barrett note in their presentation on Cargo Security, which can be found on the RS University page, “Cargo at rest is cargo at risk.”  NICB acknowledges that it usually takes under five minutes for thieves to steal your freight.

-Do you know who is handling your freight?  Fraudulent companies, often given loads through online brokers, were responsible for numerous thefts, posing as a legitimate carrier in order to pick up the customer’s freight, which then never reaches its destination.  Know who your driver is and track your shipment live by shipping with Road Scholar Transport.

Statistics:

-Data found the state of California to have over twice the number of reported thefts than any other state with 247 cases. Texas placed second with 91 and Florida third with 66.

-The highest theft rate occurred in the month of February with 113 cases, followed by August at 78 and June with 76 thefts.

commodities

Provided by www.nicb.org/File%20Library/Public%20Affairs/2010-NICB-Identified-Cargo-Thefts.pdf

-When looking at the type of product thieves chose to steal, electronics stood out as the cargo of choice, accounting for 139 stolen shipments.  Ranking second was “other” at 118 and food third at 108.  Pharmaceuticals, a high valued target, only experienced 29 thefts, though suffering large losses, placing it at the number ten spot among the types of commodities stolen.  This number, however, excludes controlled pharmaceuticals (making up the 15th spot with five thefts) and over-the-counter pharmaceuticals (18th with two cases).  When combined, pharmaceutical theft would have 36 reports of theft last year, making it tied with metal in the 7th position.

Effects:

-Cargo theft does not only affect the shipper, receiver, and carrier but everyone in general.  According to the report, consumers face retail mark-ups of nearly 20% when freight is stolen.

-Carriers and shippers that are fortunate to have their cargo recovered often receive “damaged or tainted products that cannot be resold.”

-Along with higher costs come higher risks.  Thefts can result in harm for drivers and consumers face the chance of being sold a product that has been tampered with.  As the NICB explains, there have been times when thieves have altered the expiration date on products such as baby formula in order to resell it.  This, along with improper storage, can lead to health concerns when ingested.

Prevention:

-The NICB explains that the first step in avoiding employee theft is to properly screen staff.  That’s why Road Scholar Transport conducts background checks on all new hires and routine checks on drivers.

-Educating your staff on proper security measures is another way to prevent cargo theft.  As the NICB notes, employees should be trained on how to safeguard “five important assets” including “employee, trailer, tractor, cargo, and customers.”  At Road Scholar Transport, we hold safety meetings for our drivers as well as continuously educate our staff on the latest news in the trucking industry.  Working with the Cargo Security Alliance, our employees are alert of the newest and best ways to ensure the security of your freight.  With independent tracking on both the tractor and trailer, tools that make it easy and convenient for our customers to monitor their freight live, and other extensive security features which you can view at www.roadscholar.com, Road Scholar is protecting the safety of your shipment.

-The NICB encourages drivers to make a continuous run without stopping for the first 200 miles, “use secured lots,…avoid theft hotspots,” as well as not to assign new drivers the task of transporting expensive shipments.

Save yourself the hassle of wondering if your freight will be safe during transport by shipping with a secure company such as Road Scholar Transport.

Freight Forecast: Revenue for Transportation Industry Expected to Increase 66% by 2022 as Trucking Continues to Dominate Industry

Monday, May 23rd, 2011

ATAThe American Trucking Associations (ATA) announced their increasing growth expectations for freight and intermodal volumes as well as a rise in tonnage in their U.S. Freight Transportation Forecast to 2022.

According to FTR Associates’ Eric Starks, truck freight is expected to grow 5% with a “strong pickup” during the last two quarters of this year, they noted in fleetowner.com.

ATA’s Bob Costello, further forecasted the trucking industry to transport 70% of the freight market by the year 2022 with a 66% increase in revenue (http://fleetowner.com/management/news/freight-outlook-bright-0523/).

Although many would expect to see the number of trucks on the road mounting to meet the rise in freight, Starks explains, that is not the case.  More trucks are expected to be purchased but as replacements for older equipment instead of as add-ons, continuing capacity issues.

In addition to truck freight increases, intermodal volumes (“freight moved by a modal combination of truck and rail”) are expected to climb “6.6% a year between 2011 and 2016, and 5.5% annually through 2022” with revenue of $30.7 billion, Fleet Owner explains.  Even with this increase, intermodal is still not expected to surpass trucking as the favorable means of transport.

Tonnage, Costello continued, is predicted to take a 24% hike as well by 2022, and whilst the trucking industry remains dominant, “comprising 67% of tonnage and 81% of revenue in 2010,” it’s a different story with the rail industry, the site notes.

As the total tonnage in the trucking industry is increasing, rail is expected to decrease in 2022 to 14.6%.

Trucking will remain the dominant means of transporting your cargo in the next Road Scholar Transportdecade, the ATA, HIS Global Insight, and Martin Labbe Associates predicts, and Road Scholar Transport is continuing to keep it that way through the safe transport of your LTL and Truckload freight.  Go to www.roadscholar.com to get a quote and view our services!

A more in depth forecast will be given by the FTR on June 9th.  Those wishing to attend the webinar can sign up at https://www2.gotomeeting.com/register/188112562.

Consortium Outlines Ways to Protect Pharmaceuticals During Transport

Friday, May 20th, 2011

Rx-360, a group of volunteers consisting of members and shippers of the Pharmaceutical and Biotech industry, addressed the issue regarding the rise in pharmaceutical theft last week.

Rx-360

The consortium, formed in 2009 and whose purpose is to improve the secure transport of pharmaceuticals, outlined what they believe would enhance the safety of pharmaceutical shipments, according to www.rx-360.org.

Over a billion dollars is lost annually as a result of cargo thefts across the nation, partially due to punishment not being strict enough, as well as the need for multiple security means on transport trucks, such as those belonging to Road Scholar Transport which contain independent tractor and trailer tracking, navalock, bolts, seals, and much more.

According to Rx-360, there are standard measures that can be taken based on the level of security to prevent cargo threats and are outlined below (information provided by http://www.rx-360.org/LinkClick.aspx?fileticket=l5-cxXtx4p4%3D&tabid=209):

-For standard shipments, RX-360 recommends, “panic buttons within the ShowMedrivers compartment (Road Scholar uses Qualcomm which features similar panic buttons disabling the vehicle and preventing it from being stolen), hard sided vehicles, bull dog locks, seals, security vetting of drivers and probationary period of six months with the carrier before moving pharmaceutical product (you can verify a driver hassle-free online at http://www.roadscholar.com/verification.php), satellite tracking of the trailer position (ask about Road Scholar’s ShowMe feature which enables real-time tracking down to the “breadcrumbs”) and documentation controls.”

-For sensitive shipments, the group encourages “additional alarms ReeferTrakindicating when the trailer doors are open (satellite located, remote temperature monitoring), roof markings to allow the identification of the trailer by air, additional probationary period for the driver before moving sensitive shipments, known securing parking locations and, in some cases, the use of two drivers.”  It comes as no surprise that Road Scholar Transport provides electronic door monitoring alerting of every time a door is opened or closed, user-defined temperature alerts and monitoring via ReeferTrak, aerial tracking, and even the utilization of a team of drivers.

-Finally, for critical shipments, Rx-360 “entails the logistic service provider working with the site/market to determine per product what is critical (security, quality, both)” with “tailor made solutions for the specific distribution need.”

24 hour expedited

For those shipments that need to arrive at their destination fast, Road Scholar provides expedited shipping options.

Tylenol Overdosage in Children Leads to Unanimous Vote Towards Label Change

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

After concerns over the dosage instructions of over-the-counter pharmaceuticals, the federal advisory panel has finally urged the dosage of Tylenol to be changed reflecting the weight of a child, an article in Medical News Today notes.Tylenol

Although a child may be between 6-8 years old, which dosing instructions also correlate with 48-59 lbs on certain children’s Tylenol medications, a child may weigh more than the package lists for that age.  Then what?  How much medication do you measure out?

That is a common concern today since the average weight of a child has increased throughout the years.  The federal advisory panel encourages packages and dosing to be changed to account for this, the site notes.

It is very easy to overdose on acetaminophen, a popular pain reliever for headaches, fever, and muscle aches.  Common means resulting in overdose include (information provided by http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/225794.php):

-Improper measuring tools. This includes spoons which are commonly used to substitute the tablespoon.

-Little or no relief. If the medication is not working, more parents are apt to give their child more.

-In reach of children. If children can get their hands on it, then they probably will, mistaking if for a drink.

-Improper dosage instructions. Many children’s liquid medicines come with their own measuring cups, but according to studies, what is labeled as a 5 mL cup actually holds over 6 mL, leading nearly 70% of parents to distribute more liquid than allowed.

-Concentration Differences. Researchers have found children’s medications to be less concentrated than medication for infants, which are distributed through the use of droppers.  In response to concerns, manufacturers will ask distributors and retailers to take the concentrated infant drops off shelves and replace them with new medications.

Just as acetaminophen overdose is very easy to do, the consequences can be serious as well, leading to liver failure among other dangerous conditions.

Keep your pharmaceuticals safe by transporting with Road Scholar Transport’s temperature protect reefers.

Failure to transport certain medications at specified temperatures can lead to infected products that, in return, can cause health problems when consumed.  With constant monitoring alerting of any change in the temperature of your freight, as well as the toughest security features on the market, you can rest assured that your products are safe in Road Scholar’s trailers.

Children's Craniofacial Foundation

Better yet, we will transport your pharmaceuticals in one of our many awareness trailers including The Children’s Craniofacial Foundation, The Children’s Cancer Recovery Foundation, Autism Speaks, and many more.  Visit www.roadscholarawareness.org to learn more as we move towards a cure.

Have you ever had an occurrence in which your freight was not transported at the appropriate temperature?
